Tennis WTA Finals Starts

Monday sees the WTA Finals concluding the WTA season in Fort Worth, Texas. The women’s tennis tournament features eight players competing on the indoor hard courts at the Dickies Arena and it’ll close another fascinating year of women’s tennis.

With just the highest eight ranked players competing, the WTA Finals will be eagerly watched and the best tennis bookmakers will be very busy in the days to come. But who has the best chance of winning the 2022 WTA Finals?

Can Swiatek claim her first WTA Finals title?

All eyes will be on Iga Swiatek as the number one ranked player in the world aims to win her first WTA Finals title. While Swiatek had a disappointing Wimbledon, she’s already racked up wins at the French Open, the US Open and no less than six other major tennis tournaments.

This has come as part of one of the best-ever seasons in women’s tennis and it included an incredible 135-day unbeaten run. At just 21 years old the Polish star has the potential to be one of the all-time greats.

However, the much-loved Ons Jabeur could be on course to cause a big upset in Fort Worth. The Tunisian star claimed the runner-up spot at the US Open and her title-winning performance at the Madrid Open shows that she can keep her cool to get big results.

Jabeur’s losing opponent in Madrid - Jessica Pegula - also features in this year’s WTA Finals, and she’ll be looking to bounce back from that disappointment. With three Grand Slam quarter-final appearances under her belt in 2022, the US star could easily use the home crowd to her advantage. Other competitors include the likes of Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina and Maria Sakkari.

However, it could be the 18-year old Coco Gauff who draws the biggest crowds as she continues her incredible career trajectory. With an impressive performance at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico, Gauff will be looking to confirm herself as one of tennis’ brightest prospects at this year’s WTA Finals.

While Swiatek may be the favourite in the odds at the fastest cashout bookmakers, it’s still going to be hard to predict the overall winner at Fort Worth. This is because none of the competitors have managed to win the WTA Finals before.

The Australian star Ashleigh Barty shocked the tennis world with her surprise retirement, while the Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina is out of action on maternity leave. Plus with the Spaniard Garbine Muguruza failing to qualify, it’s anybody’s guess as to who could win the 2022 WTA Finals.

Of course, this tournament has produced many iconic performances from the legends of women’s tennis. Chris Evert won the inaugural WTA Finals back in 1972 before going on to win it a further three times. The record-holder is still Martina Navratilova with her outstanding eight wins, with Steffi Graf and Serena Williams following on close behind with five trophies each.

Recent years have seen many different women claiming the WTA Finals title. While Agnieszka Radwanska, Dominika Cibulkova and Caroline Wozniacki have all managed to put in title-winning performances, they have failed to follow it up with another trophy.

The draw for this year’s WTA Finals will take place on Friday and the players will be put into a round-robin format of two groups of four. Only the top two players will proceed into the semi-finals. With the winner of the WTA Finals picking up $820,000 in prize money, it’s going to be a fascinating week of women’s tennis.
