We have some truly awesome golf to watch this week. On the PGA Tour we have The Rocket Mortgage Championship, but the one I am really looking forward to is the DP World Tour event where The Belfry hosts the British Masters for the sixth time and what a cracker this is going to be.
The Belfry has three separate courses, the Derby, the PGA and the Brabazon, with the latter hosting the main events at the venue. The Brabazon is where the British Masters action takes place and it will present the challengers with a real test of their skills.
I’m especially familiar with this event, having tried to qualify myself going back a few years and I can assure you that anyone competing here needs a really well-rounded game to achieve any level of success.
This is one course where home players have been very successful. So, where my usual selections would not factor in course form or home player advantage, this is an exception and it could be very wise to think outside of the box here.
Last year’s winner, Thorbjorn Olesen, is set to try and retain his title and has an obvious chance. I’m sure he will make a really bold bid to win it again, but he hasn’t made my list for this week. Whatever happens, it is always a superb watch and I can’t wait for this one to get underway.
For both of the events I’m covering here tonight, Ladbrokes and Coral are offering 10 places, so I’m going to get stuck in with five winning picks for the DP event and another three betting tips for the PGA Tour. As usual, I will advise trying EW singles and EW cross-doubles for my selections, in the hope that we can add further to the 799 points of profit we have already gained this year.
If you fancy your chances and don’t already have accounts at my two favourite golf bookie sites, what are you waiting for? Both Ladbrokes and Coral are offering £20 in free bets when you place a bet of just £5. Surely worth a second glance guys!
My first selection of the week is world number 101 Yannik Paul, who has a DPWT win to his name following his victory in the Mallorca Open back in October and has achieved some really strong finishes this year too. His two main aspirations are to make the Top 50 in the world (which he is more than capable of doing) and the other is to make the Ryder Cup team, for which he is currently being considered, so a win here would solidify his spot for sure.
His iron play is second to none and as far as greens in regulation is concerned, he has been very consistent with his putter too. I think he is going to be well up for this and I can’t see him being far away at the end of this. 35/1 is great value for this the impressive German player.
One of my more regular selections is Jorge Campillo, another player who has aspirations of making the Ryder Cup team, and this is a great place for him to make his mark. He has won three times on the DPWT already and his win in the Kenyan Open scored a 33-point hit for us too.
His iron play is just superb, but he’s pretty lethal with his putter too. His price tag reflects the fact that he did have a couple of bad tournaments, at least by his standards, but he finished last week’s BMW with a six under par round, so he brings some momentum with him as he lines up for this event. He would get one of my spots for the Ryder Cup for sure, but a good performance here will massively go in his favour.
Eddie Pepperell is the first pick for my home squad this week and he is a player who looks like he is about to put in a big performance. He is a two-time DPWT winner already. He won this event in 2018 at Walton Heath, finished runner-up a year later at Hillside and he knows the Brabazon course like the back of his hand.
I have a good deal of respect for the fact that he took a bit of time off to work on his game and also had some sessions with Bob Rotella, who is a much-respected sports psychologist, to help boost his mental game. He has some clocked up some good scores round the Belfry and has won here several times as an amateur too. His last few events have been promising and I’m pretty sure he is boiling up for a big performance this week.
My fourth selection is Danish player John Axelsen. He is only 25 years old and he is a player you will hear a lot more of over the coming years. He is a very talented indeed, having grown up winning events alongside the Hojgaard twins, and he is also a four- time winner on the Nordic League Tour which takes some doing.
Over the last two or three months he has taken his game to a new level and is starting to get competitive in the big leagues. I’m convinced he will mop up plenty of DPWT events in the future. He is going to break his maiden soon and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him do it at the Belfry. He is completely fearless and a supremely talented player, don’t miss out on him at a huge price.
Richard Mansell is a player that is well on his way to being a winner on Tour. He came through the Jamega Tour, The EuroPro and then the Challenge Tour to get his DPWT spot and he definitely doesn’t look out of place here. As you know, I love to name drop and I played alongside Richard and Dale Whitnell in a Tour event and out of the two, I thought Richard was the superior player.
Although he wasn’t the first of the two to win on Tour, he is a player you can rely on to play a consistent game every time and he has some superb credentials for the Belfry. In last year’s event he finished tied for eighth place, with a final round of 66 which was the lowest score in the field on that day, so we know that this track suits him very nicely. He has won here as an Amateur on more than one occasion and could be about to put in a huge performance this week.
I promised you two and here is the second Bet £5, get £20 offer from Coral, who also have 10 places up for grabs for both of these events.
Davis Riley ran out a very impressive winner of the Zurich in April and he went straight into my notebook with that performance. He hasn’t played at quite that level in his last five starts, but he hasn’t played badly either and his last two starts have seemed a little bit more like it.
With this event expected to be really low-scoring, I think Davis Riley has a big chance. His approach play is very good indeed and he will give himself plenty of opportunities this week. If all of the players in this field were guaranteed to be at their best, then Davis Riley would be priced much shorter, but the bookies are being very generous after his recent form. Don’t be put off by that, he looks like a player that’s about to come back to top form to me.
One of my favourite players on the PGA Tour is South African Christiaan Bezuidenhour, who looks more than comfortable playing at this level. He has one of the best swings to watch, its’s a very good motion, and he has one of the most controlled ball flights you will see anywhere.
He has played well this year, with plenty of high-class efforts, and he is 100% good enough to win on the PGA Tour. He has won as a professional, so he knows how to get it done, and this week could just set up for nicely for him.
There is no doubt in my mind that Taylor Moore is overpriced for this event. He was superb when he won the Valspar and he has had some decent finishes there too. The track layout there is very similar to this, so it should be right up his street.
To win on this week’s PGA track, players need to shoot low scores and Taylor fits that category with ease, regularly shooting in the 60’s. He has all the credentials to go well here and his best attribute is putting, he rarely has a bad day on the greens. He has missed two cuts coming into this event, but as he only missed out by a shot and played some steady golf throughout the two days, that is no cause for concern.
Thank you all for reading my article, I appreciate you tuning in. Hopefully we can get straight back into the winners enclosure this week and I think I have built up a really strong squad of selections. Don’t forget to check out all of our offers here on betting.co.uk and good luck with your bets!
