We had Antoine Rozner sneak a place for us last week, but I’m hoping to go one better and get us into the winner’s enclosure this time around. We only have the one event to look at for this week, which is The Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour. This is all set to be an unmissable contest, as the legend that is Tiger Woods makes his first appearance back on Tour.
Although it’s great to see him in the lineup here, from the punting perspective, he is hard to back with any real confidence. However, I do have three selections for this week's Riviera Country Club event.
This week, I’m recommending Coral for your golf betting, as they are offering 10 places for the Genesis Invitational, plus a a fantastic bet £5, get £20 in free bets deal to make the most of them.
The Genesis Invitational takes place at the Riviera Country Club in California. It’s a fantastic Par 71 course that runs over 7,322 yards and there are just three Par 5 holes. You really need a good iron player on your side this week, in the sense of someone that hits plenty of greens in regulation, and controls their distance well too.
It is possible to score well, but careful play and four rounds in the 60s are needed to even go close here. I have selected three players for you this week, who I believe have got what it takes…
My first selection this week is Ludvig Aberg. He is the current world number 11 and is seemingly improving all the time, so he could be overpriced here. A win would see him get inside the Top 10, so he’s certain to play his best game. Speaking of which, he ticks a lot of boxes in terms of the attributes needed to do well on this course.
He has played progressively in his four events so far this season, finishing tied for ninth place in the Farmers Insurance Open, then coming second in the AT&T last week. As you know, that latter event was cut short due to bad weather, so he could well have gone on to win it if the final round had gone ahead.
But most importantly, he has shown some very good form on courses where iron play is important. He gained his first PGA Tour victory in the RSM Classic last year, where he dominated with strong iron play throughout, finishing with 61s in the final two rounds. He is a very impressive player and outside of the market leaders, I think he holds the best value in the field.
I have been really impressed with Sam Burns in recent weeks. Over the first part of this season, he has been very consistent with his irons and has a solid short game too, as proven by the fact that in 14 of his last 15 rounds, he has come in with scores in the 60s.
Just like Ludvig Aberg, Sam Burns is a very good ball striker and I think he has the ability to make a real impact in this event. He has won on Tour five times previously and everything suggests he could easily add a sixth title to his resume here.
Matt Fitzpatrick is a Major winner who is slowly finding his form this season and I can see him playing well here. He has a very controlled shot shape with his irons, and as I mentioned earlier, this is a very important attribute for this week's event and I’m sure he will get plenty of birdie opportunities.
By the way, Matty Fitzpatrick is a real momentum player and when he gets his putter rolling, he can shoot a real good score out of nowhere. I really fancy his chances this week at 33/1, especially with plenty of places available.
