After being delayed by a full year due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the Olympic Games is almost here! In nine days from the time of writing, the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony will be watched by sporting fans from all over the world.
Then, the sports action will kick off straight away, and there are a number of medals up for grabs on the very first day! It’s an exciting time for many, and here are the sports with medals available on day one of the Tokyo Olympics.
The Mixed Team Archery event will take place from early morning on the very first day of the Olympics, and will come to a conclusion later that day. The Mixed Team gold medal match will finish the event. Team GB have their Mixed Team at the ready for day one.
On the morning of Saturday 24, we will watch the men’s Road Race take place, and it will be one of the first medals awarded at the Games. Team GB’s Tao Geoghegan Hart will be making his Olympics debut to compete in this event.
There’s a lot of Fencing action taking place early in Japan early in the Games. On the first day, medals will be awarded following the conclusion of the women’s Epee event, as well as the men’s Sabre event. No one will represent Team GB here, with only one Fencing athlete on the plane to Tokyo.
Judo is always a popular sporting event in the Olympics, especially in recent times for Team GB. On the day after the Olympic Ceremony, the men’s -60kg and women’s -48kg gold medals will both be up for grabs. Team GB will be represented by three-time Olympian Ashley McKenzie in the men’s event.
There are plenty of shooting medals up for grabs in Tokyo, including two events starting and finishing on the first day. The men’s 10m Air Pistol event and the women’s 10m Air Rifle event will both be on the line. Seonaid McIntosh will make her Olympics debut representing Team GB – currently world record holder.
There are also two events on the first day for Taekwondo – the men’s -58kg and women’s -49kg. There are five Team GB Taekwondo athletes on the plane to Japan, but in different weight categories, and therefore won’t be looking to get their hands on these particular Olympic medals.
On the very first day of the Tokyo Olympics, the women’s 49kg event will take place to see who takes gold. Despite four female Team GB athletes competing in Weightlifting events, none are in the 49kg category – watch the later sport events to catch them in action.
