The July Meeting at Newmarket

Welcome back racing fans, I hope you're well. It’s been a good start to the week, with two of my three selections landing at 7/2 and 6/1, and I have two really good each way bets for you on Thursday as well.

This is the start of the Newmarket July meeting and there is some really good Group action to look at over the next three days. My first comes in the Bahrain July Stakes where Andrew Balding has a strong favourite and the other comes in the Bet 365 Heritage Handicap where I have a 25/ shot for you, which I think is seriously overpriced.

14:25 Newmarket - Bahrain July Stakes 6f (Group2)

Chief Mankato EW @ 13/2

The Bahrain Stakes looks a great race full of potential and Andrew Balding’s runner, Pursonague, is the current favourite, having won impressively on his debut at Haydock. However, that wasn’t the strongest of races and he will need to do a great deal more to win here.

Mountain Bear is the representative of Ballydoyle here and he has to get respect after improving to win at the Curragh last time out, but again, he may need a bit more to get the job done this time. In my opinion, Malc is the main danger here. He was runner up in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and should improve for the step up in trip,

But my selection is the Charles Hills runner Chief Mankato who won on debut and seemed to progressed nicely as the race went on. He is a rather flashy colt, who was withdrawn from the Coventry after getting a little heated in the stalls, so he will need to settle better for sure but I think that has been factored into his price.  He won really well at Windsor and looks to be learning on the job and to me that leaves him open to even more improvement on his second start.

He clearly handles the ground and his form has been given more than one boost since his debut, so I think he could surpass his rivals here. As mentioned, he is very flashy and can get lit up, but he won in style, and holds major claims with an each way price. To me he looks like a really smart prospect to go forward with.

15:00 Newmarket – Bet 365 Heritage Handicap 6f

Ferrous EW @ 25/1

The Bet 365 Heritage Handicap is a really interesting race and at the top of the market we have Washington Heights as the favourite. He has an obvious chance, as does Quinalt who beat him last time out, but there is a slight swing in the weights and they still remain very closely matched to my eye.

Out of the runners at the head of the market, I think Frankness is the one who has the best chance and feel she was unlucky not to have finished closer at Royal Ascot. She was slowly away and found plenty of traffic problems before finishing five lengths back off the eventual winner. If things go smoother for her, this Frankel filly could well have a big say.

But with plenty of places on offer here, I think it could be worth giving Jack Channon’s three-year-old colt Ferrous a chance. He is seemingly very well Handicapped and having Aiden Kelly on board takes a further 3lb off his weight here. He has been improving nicely and only has four lengths to find with Commonwealth Cup winner Shaquille. He franked his form further by beating Pure Angel over a shorter distance next time out.

He was then slowly away at Windsor last time, when he was sent off favourite and was always going to find it difficult to get back to the front that day, but it was a forgivable effort. He goes back up to six furlongs here and I think he is a very interesting contender who warrants plenty of respect off this low weight.
