What's Happening in the NFL So Far?

We are well into the second half of the NFL Regular Season, and it’s fair to say that the action has been as wild as ever. There have been shocks, incredible plays and some thrilling finishes, let’s take a look at some of the key storylines from the season so far.

Eagles flying

The last unbeaten run in the NFL may be over, but the Philadelphia Eagles still look like the team to beat in the NFC. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has taken a huge step forward this year. His leadership qualities and decision making have been pivotal to the Eagles’ success. Offseason acquisition AJ Brown has been superb in the wideout position, whilst rookie Jordan Davis looks like a defensive star in the making.

The Eagles are currently priced at 7/1 to win the Super Bowl, slightly shorter than their NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys and the fast improving San Francisco 49ers.

Wide open AFC

The identity of the AFC’s representative in the Super Bowl is anybody’s guess. Preseason favourites the Buffalo Bills are right in the mix, but recent defeats to the Jets and Vikings have raised doubts over their durability. Nevertheless, many of the best bookmakers still have them as short as 4/1 to win the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs have replaced the Bills as favourites in the AFC. Patrick Mahomes is playing as well as ever, meaning they can win from virtually any position. Throw in a wily head coach in Andy Reid and you have a team that should be right in the Postseason mix.

However, there are plenty of over strong contenders in the AFC. The Tennessee Titans look rock solid now Ryan Tannehill is back under centre. The Cincinnati Bengals are rediscovering their 2021 form, whilst the Miami Dolphins are playing some of the most exciting football in the league.

Surprise packages

The Minnesota Vikings are a talented team, but few people would have predicted an 8-1 start for Kevin O’Connell’s men. Kirk Cousins has been in excellent form at quarterback, whilst Justin Jefferson is proving to be one of the standout receivers in the league. A 40-3 Week 11 defeat to the Cowboys will have been sobering, but the Vikings are still in pole position to make the Playoffs.

The Seattle Seahawks were many people’s tip to wind up with the number one Draft pick, but Geno Smith has been a revelation at quarterback and Pete Carroll’s men are right in the Playoff mix. The Seahawks certainly appear to have got the better end of the blockbuster trade deal that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Wilson has endured a torrid time in Denver and the Broncos have passed 20 points just once all season.

The Washington Commanders were another unfancied side coming into the season. A 1-4 start suggested a long season in the Capital, but a QB switch from Carson Wenz to Taylor Heinicke triggered a run of five wins in six games. The Commanders face a tough schedule to end the season, but have already exceeded most preseason expectations.

Until recently, both New York sides would have been in the ‘surprise package’ conversation. But both the Jets and Giants have experienced dips in form at precisely the wrong time. At least one NY team should make the Playoffs but it seems unlikely they will make it past Wild Card Weekend.
