We are now into Day 4 of Wimbledon, and there has already been plenty of talking points. The prestigious tournament is well and truly underway – read on to find out what’s going on at Wimbledon 2021!
At the time of writing, day four has just begun, with a number of men’s tennis talents in action in the coming days. Top talents from the men’s world rankings have all been in action in the first two rounds, with all-time great Roger Federer, Nick Kyrgios and World No.2 Daniil Medvedev playing their second round matchups today!
On Wednesday afternoon, Andy Murray step foot onto Centre Court for the first time in two years, and had an epic second-round battle with German Oscar Otte. After a comfortable first set for the British tennis star, Murray found himself losing the next two, and needing a comeback in the tie.
With an impressive performance, Murray clawed it back to level the sets at two apiece, and won the decider 6-2. It was an exciting watch for fans in attendance, as well as those tuned in to their TVs.
Elsewhere, World No.1 Novak Djokovic cruised to victory in his second-round tie with Kevin Anderson. The matchup followed Murray and Otte on Centre Court, meaning those on the grand stage had some high-quality tennis action all day. With 6-3 wins in all three sets, Djokovic showed why he is the best at the moment.
There are a couple of big names missing from the women’s singles, including Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep – current world No.2 and No.3 respectively. Osaka pulled out of the tournament after suffering from mental health issues, but is planning on a return to action for the Tokyo Olympics – her home nation.
The 2019 women’s singles champion Simona Halep withdrew from the tournament last weekend, meaning that the Romanian is unable to defend her title this year. It’s also the second Grand Slam that Halep has withdrawn from, after being unable to compete in the French Open in May.
In the WTA rankings, Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty is currently world No.1, and due to absences at the tournament, there’s a strong case for Barty to go all the way this month. To open her Wimbledon campaign, Barty saw off Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro.
Today, in the second-round, Barty will return to Centre Court to play Russian tennis player Anna Blinkova. Will the world No.1 showcase her impressive skills, or will there be a major upset in today’s action?
Unfortunately, with less than a set played in her first-round match, American great Serena Williams was forced to retire due to injury. In the fifth game, Williams slipped, and went down once again in the seventh, which proved to be the final straw.
Luck didn’t improve for sister Venus, either, as she was knocked out in straight sets in her second-round tie. Yesterday, Ons Jabeur pulled off a 7-5, 6-0 win against Williams to progress further in the tournament. Meanwhile, the Williams sisters will have to watch Wimbledon from courtside.
We are now into just the fourth day of the tournament, and there’s plenty of tennis action still to come! We have only just started the second round of the singles tournament, so there’s much more excitement and entertainment on the courts during the next two weeks.
Don’t forget about the doubles! There is of course doubles tennis action also taking place in this tournament, with the mixed doubles kicking off with the first-round on Friday 2nd July! The men’s and women’s doubles have already commenced.
