If this is your first visit to my golf betting tips page, then here is a little bit about my background for you. I was once a Tour professional myself and I really enjoy putting my golfing knowledge to the test, by trying to select the players that I think are best suited to a course. It’s gone really well to date, as we are currently sitting on a ROI of 701%.
Coming into this week, I could hardly be in better form after six winning weeks in a row. Most recently, in the Canadian Open, I managed to land us the winner at 66/1, the runner up at 20/1 and two players in a tie for third at 125/1 and 80/1. I have some whoppers for you again this week, who I’m hoping will extend our winning run even further.
This week is a little extra special, as we are heading over to The Los Angeles Country Club in California to take a look at the 123rd US Open. It’s the third Major of the season and this is an absolute beast of a course featuring 7234 yards of absolute carnage!
The course opens with a very achievable Par 5, but the final stretch at the LA Country Club consists of three Par 4s. Those all measure more than 500 yards, so you need players that can really pull out those long iron shots.
As usual, I’ll put my player selections up in strength order and I’ll be backing them all each way, except for my #1 selection, who I personally will be backing to win, but with a double figure price, you might prefer to take him on as an each way shot.
I have also put up two Wildcard selections, which I’ll be playing each way with a bit of pocket change. Although both are at crazy big prices, I genuinely think they are two really good outsiders, who should outplay their odds with the resumes they have.
As ever, it’s a must to gamble responsibly and bet within your means. Don’t let our good run tempt you into spending more. With the prices on offer, small stakes still bring the potential for a decent return.
With this week’s US Open being a wide-open contest, what better way to start off than with some free bets. Today’s offer comes courtesy of Ladbrokes and if you bet £5, you’ll get 4 x £5 free bets. Surely those will help you to cover all angles.
My strongest selection of the week comes from Oslo, Norway in the name of Viktor Hovland. Viktor has had a superb season and really established himself as one of the best players in the world. He is currently ranked as world number five, and just seems to be going from strength to strength. It surely won't be too long until he gets his hands on one of the Major trophies.
He has already had some strong finishes in big events this year, having finished third in The Players, seventh in The Masters and second in the PGA Championship last month. All of which will be great experience for this 25-year-old as he heads into this week's Major. In The Masters he was leading after round one with a round of 65, having achieved 7-under par.
Although he didn’t play his best golf for the remainder of the week, he still finished well-placed, which is a sign of a good player. In the PGA Championship, again he was bang in contention and pretty much only hit one bad shot, which ultimately cost him the tournament, which ended with him finishing in a tie for second place.
Overall, it was a fantastic performance and he continued in the same form for his next two events, finishing seventh in the Charles Schwab and then winning the Memorial Tournament by beating Denny McCarty in a playoff. Proof that he hasn’t been affected by his unfortunate runs in the Majors so far this year.
There’s plenty I like about his game for this course especially. He is plenty long off the tee which he will absolutely need this week, fantastic at playing a soft controlled fade with his irons and has a brilliant putting average, which sets him up for a big week at this year’s US Open. Most importantly, Viktor Hovland comes into this week’s event fresh and ready to play his best golf, making him my top selection this week and one that is surely going to give us a good run for our money.
Justin Rose arguably has one of the best swings on Tour. He is a rejuvenated character again this year and is back in great form heading into the US Open. I have watched Justin for many years and he is very calm under pressure, which will help him immensely this week. He is seemingly back in the same sort of form that saw him win the 2013 US Open and has since added 10 more PGA Tour victories and an Olympic gold medal to his resume.
Winning in the AT&T at Pebble Beach in February put him back in the top 25 of the world rankings and he has been knocking on the door ever since. It would be no surprise to me if he were to add a second Major title to his resume this week. In my opinion, he represents the gold standard as a professional and with his very repeatable swing, Justin is a solid option to score again here.
He threatened in the Canadian Open last week and is generally a very consistent player. Like Viktor Hovland, even on the days Justin Rose isn’t firing, he is still shooting very respectable scores and that counts for a lot in this game. He is a true professional, with tons of experience and on his best form, he is more than capable of competing with the best players in the world. Justin’s price tag is a real discredit to his ability and he is the value pick of the week in my opinion.
Harris English could well be the dark horse in this year’s USA Open field. He currently sits in the world number 42 spot, a ranking he thoroughly deserves as a four-time winner on the PGA Tour circuit and with a bit more luck in play he could easily have added a fifth title to his total this year.
He finished second in the Arnold Palmer, third in the Wells Fargo and was at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of the Charles Schwab, but he caught some unlucky breaks early on in the round and it was always going to be hard for him to come back after that.
His form strongly suggests he plays better at the longer courses and the fact that he is very long off the tee gives him a big advantage here. Harris knows how to win and his consistency and attitude should just keep him there or thereabouts, provided he turns up in the same form.
In my opinion, Adam Scott has the best swing on Tour besides Sebastian Sodeberg. He has been having a really good year and his record in big events and Majors is just superb. The harder the course the better for Adam Scott and the long finish at the Los Angeles Country Club will be no issue for him. He has effortless distance off the tee and is just about my favourite long iron player on Tour, which is a much-needed skill for this year’s event.
He sets up for this track really well, but I think what will determine the outcome for Adam this week will be his putting, as he has been very hit and miss with the flat stick. However, the rest of his game is so solid that I’m sure he will get chances here.
Another naturally gifted player is Wyndham Clark, who finally broke his PGA Tour maiden with an impressive victory at the Wells Fargo Championship and he did it in style. He played consistently and handled the pressure of holding off the chasing pack with aplomb.
Along with his first PGA Tour win this year, he has also racked up six Top 10 places. His most notable playing achievement coming in the Zurich, where he backed up a round of 61 with a 62, which is some going. In fact, he regularly scores in the 60s, so his price of 80/1 suggests he has slipped under the radar now, a fact that I shall take full advantage of.
Wyndham’s long game is excellent, proven by the fact that he is ranked as the 7th longest on Tour this season. His putting has been excellent this year too, so that is a really decent combo to have taking into this week. He is currently the world number 32 and with a PGA Tour win now under his belt, he could well be on the way to winning his first Major as well.
My first Wildcard pick is the Canadian player Taylor Pendrith, who is very exciting to watch and hits the ball a mile off the tee. As I mentioned earlier, you need to be good with your long irons this week. So, the fact that Taylor holds the second spot for strokes gained from 175 to 200 yards out, is a dangerously good stat to have going into this week.
He is also 12th on the putting stats from 10 feet, so Taylor has a lot going for him here. The math really is a no-brainer, at 400/1 to win, a place would get you a return at 80/1, so there is plenty to like about him at the price and certainly no better bigshots out there with his level of value.
Taylor Moore is already a PGA Tour winner, following his victory in the Valspar, which also puts him just inside the Top 50 in the world. Not only has he won on Tour this year, he has also racked up two Top 10 finishes.
His putting stats from 4ft all the way out to 12ft have him in the Top 10 on Tour and he’s also plenty long off the tee, so the price on him for a crack at the US Open isn’t really adding up. With his ability, 250/1 is way too big to miss and it’s well worth getting some pocket change on this lad.
If you already have a Ladbrokes account, don’t worry, there are more than £250 worth of other bookie offers for you to pick from right here at Betting.co.uk.
