The draw for the Women’s Euro 2022 football tournament took place on Thursday afternoon (October 28).
There will be a home nations clash as England and Northern Ireland are drawn together in Group A, alongside Austria and Norway.
It’s the first time that Northern Ireland have qualified for the tournament and they will go into the tournament as underdogs for Group A. Kenny Shiels’ side qualified for the tournament following a shock 2-0 playoff win over Ukraine in Belfast back in April 2021.
Three of the four teams drawn in Group A are currently in the same group for the World Cup qualifiers.
England, Northern Ireland and Austria will find themselves very familiar with each other by the time they come to face-off in Euro 2022 Group A in the summer.
Northern Ireland kept their chances of qualifying for the World Cup alive following a 2-2 draw with Austria. Shiels’ women were comfortably beaten last weekend against England though, who ran out 4-0 winners at Wembley.
The two home nations will face off once more before Euro 2022, with the final game of their World Cup qualifying campaign set to take place in Belfast in April.
The Euro 2022 Group A tie between England and Northern Ireland will take place in July at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
England is the host nation for this summer’s tournament, with the 31 games being played across nine different stadiums across the country.
In London, Wembley will naturally host most high-profile games, including the final, while Brentford Community Stadium will also host some group games.
Other Premier League grounds being used include Old Trafford in Manchester, and St. Mary’s in Southampton - both of which will host England’s group games. The final Premier League ground being used is the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium.
Over 700,000 tickets for the Women’s Euro 2022 football tournament will go on general sale in February 2022.
The prices will range from just £5 all the way up to £50 for the most expensive tickets.
Tickets for England’s group games are more expensive than the non-host nations’, with prices starting at £7.50 for concessions, as opposed to £5.
Now for the big question - can England win Women’s Euro 2022?
Well, there are certainly quite a few factors that are definitely favourable for the Lionesses. For starters, they are the host nation and should have a strong home crowd behind them for every game.
They have also already won qualifiers against their Group A opponents Northern Ireland and Austria. In addition, they triumphed over Norway, their other Group A opponents, in the World Cup 2019 quarter-final.
It’s perhaps then not overly surprising that England are the bookies’ favourites to win the Women’s Euro 2022, at odds of 4/1 at the time of writing. This puts them ahead of reigning champions, the Netherlands, and the current ranked No.1 team in the world, Sweden.
