In shock news, Adam Hinshelwood has departed York City just five games into the season and has been replaced by Stuart Maynard. We take a look at his impact at The Ministermen and what the future holds.
Adam Hinshelwood officially joined York City on 27 February 2024, signing a long-term contract after a successful spell at Worthing in which his teams scored over 269 league goals since 2021–22 . At Worthing, he had earned promotion by winning the Isthmian League Premier Division (2021–22) and the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup (2022–23).
His move marked a step into full-time football and saw him bring trusted aides Gary Elphick (assistant) and Cameron Morrison (first team coach) with him.
In September 2024, Hinshelwood’s York City side went unbeaten over six games, earning him National League Manager of the Month after accumulating twelve points and securing five clean sheets.
Further highlights included remarkable victories such as a dramatic late comeback to beat Halifax 2-1 as well as emphatic wins like a 2-0 away victory against Oldham Athletic.
Despite a solid record—38 wins, 17 draws, and 16 losses—Hinshelwood’s tenure came to a surprise end on 28 August 2025, with the club citing a mutual agreement after just four games of the new season (1 win, 3 draws) . York’s co-chairs thanked him for his contributions and success in lifting the club’s fortunes.
Stuart Maynard brings a credible managerial résumé. Previously, he assisted at Hemel Hempstead Town and helped lead them to the Southern League title in 2013–14, then followed Dean Brennan to Billericay Town and Kingstonian.
As assistant at Wealdstone, he powered the club to the National League for the first time as champions of the National League South (2019–20) and took over as manager in early 2021, delivering one of their strongest finishes in decades.
In January 2024, Maynard was appointed head coach of Notts County, guiding them into a promotion playoff position in League Two before his dismissal in May 2025 due to their late-season form tailing off.
York did not hesitate. Just hours after Hinshelwood’s departure on 28 August 2025, Stuart Maynard was confirmed as the new permanent manager. Club co-chairs praised his “high pedigree of football knowledge” and matching ambitions to push York back into the Football League.
Linked with a host of EFL clubs during his short tenure, it would not be a surprise to see Hinshelwood in League Two or One by the turn of the year. The football romantic in me would love a return to Worthing, but bigger things are in store for the talented gaffer.
