Andy Whing Resigns At Brackley

Andy Whing has stepped down as Brackley Town manager after seven months in charge, with the Saints sitting in the National League North relegation zone. The club say Whing offered his resignation and it was accepted by the board, with former club captain Gareth Dean installed as head coach until the end of the season.

It's the latest twist for a club that's spent the best part of a decade being agonisingly close to a level it's only briefly touched.

A history of just missing out

Kevin Wilkin left Brackley in September 2022 after seven years in charge, a spell the club credited with the most successful period in its history - including the 2018 FA Trophy win and successive play-off finishes. It was his successor, Gavin Cowan, who took the club through the next chapter of heartbreak. Cowan's first season ended in a National League North play-off final defeat to Kidderminster Harriers in 2023, then the same result again - beaten by Boston United in the final in 2024.

Brackley finally got over the line in 2024/25, winning the title on the final day to reach the National League for the first time in the club's history, with Cowan named Manager of the Season. Life at the higher level started well too, including an FA Cup second-round run that saw off Notts County. Then, in January, Cowan resigned to take the head coach job at his boyhood club Shrewsbury Town, with Brackley sitting comfortably in mid-table at the time.

Whing's managerial path

Whing, a former Coventry City, Brighton and Oxford United right-back, arrived with a decent managerial reputation - three years at Banbury United, then spells at Solihull Moors and Barrow. But he couldn't arrest the National League slide he inherited, winning just once in his first 16 games as Brackley suffered an immediate relegation back to National League North, confirmed with two matches still to play.

He rebuilt heavily over the summer with 18 new signings, but the young squad struggled from the restart, taking just two wins from their first eight games and sitting 21st. Across his full seven months in charge, spanning both divisions, Whing won only three of 24 matches.

What's next

Gareth Dean, Brackley's all-time appearance record holder, steps in as head coach for the rest of the season, assisted by Alastair Worby and returning former midfielder James Armson. The club haven't ruled Dean out of the job permanently if results pick up - a familiar face trying to halt a second successive relegation battle at a club that, not so long ago, couldn't stop reaching finals.
