Brody Peart - Academy Graduate Returns To Basingstoke

Publish Date: 02/10/2024
Fact checked by: James Leeland

Brody Peart has returned to Basingstoke on a 28-day loan, providing non-league fans with a feel-good story.

The Original Goodbye

Peart, a graduate of the Basingstoke Academy, rose to prominence with his standout performances in 'Stokes treble-winning season, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances as they clinched the South Central Division title.

Making his debut at 16, he joined Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion, making numerous appearances across various youth levels. However, Peart was released by the Seagulls and spanned up by Wycombe ahead of the 2024/2025 season.

Engrained in the Culture

Peart is a boyhood Basingstoke fan. His grandad was the Kitman, his Nan on the board and his Aunty the fixture secretary, the youngster has become immersed in Basingstoke since he was a little kid.

"Shortchanged"

Seeing Peart back at the club will be a relief, especially given the circumstances surrounding his move to Brighton. Upon his move to the South Coast club, it was revealed that Basingstoke would receive no compensation from the Premier League club, despite years of developing the youngster.

This was due to the Premier League Youth Development Rule 345. This rule meant that Brighton did not have to pay Basingstoke any compensation, due to 'Stoke not being a licensed academy or a Premier League or EFL club.

Speaking on the club website at the time of the move, manager Dan Brownlie lambasted the move:

"When someone created that rule, I can’t for the life of me work out what issue they ever thought it was solving.

"Non-league football has been largely recognised as the lifeblood of the professional game. And yet here is another demonstration of it being drained.

Should more be done to protect Non-League Clubs' young prospects?

It begs the question - should more be done to protect non-League clubs and their young assets from those above them in the food chain in the EFL and Premier League? It seems a risk-free investment for Premier League clubs to sign a young player for free and then just release them if it doesn't work out.

Still, Peart's back at Basingstoke is a feel-good story and a movethat should push them up the league as they challenge for promotion to the National League South.
