Eastbourne Borough Turn to Steve King as Survival Battle Intensifies

Publish Date: 20/03/2026
Fact checked by: Jordan Noble

Eastbourne Borough have placed their faith in experienced non-league manager Steve King, appointing him as first-team boss at a critical moment in the club’s season. With the National League South campaign entering its final stretch, Borough are facing an uphill struggle to retain their Step 2 status.

King’s arrival comes amid mounting pressure at Priory Lane. A recent defeat to Maidenhead United has left Borough six points adrift of safety with just seven matches remaining, increasing the urgency surrounding the appointment.

#EBFC are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve King as permanent First Team Manager, with immediate effect.

A Season That Has Unravelled

The current campaign has proved turbulent from the outset. Eastbourne have struggled for consistency, and a series of managerial changes has disrupted any chance of sustained momentum. While performances have occasionally hinted at improvement, results have not followed, leaving the club rooted near the foot of the National League South table.

Interim periods offered brief optimism, but the inability to turn draws into wins has ultimately left Borough chasing the pack. The loss to Maidenhead underlined the scale of the task facing King, with every remaining fixture now carrying huge significance.

Context from Last Season

The contrast with last season is stark. Eastbourne Borough enjoyed one of their strongest league campaigns in recent years, finishing firmly among the division’s leading sides and spending much of the season competing near the top end of the table. That progress created genuine optimism that the club was moving toward sustained success at this level.

Expectations were therefore higher coming into the current season. However, squad turnover, tactical changes, and instability off the pitch have contributed to a sharp reversal in fortunes, turning promotion ambition into a relegation scrap.

Why Steve King?

In turning to Steve King, Borough have opted for experience and familiarity with the demands of non-league football. King is a well-known figure at this level, having managed extensively across the South of England and built a reputation for navigating challenging situations.

His managerial career includes notable spells with Lewes, where he delivered a league title, as well as Whitehawk, where he oversaw memorable FA Cup runs. He has also held senior roles at Dartford, Havant & Waterlooville, and Gloucester City.

King is known for his strong personality, organisational approach, and ability to rally dressing rooms under pressure - qualities Eastbourne will desperately need as they attempt to close the gap to safety.

The Challenge Ahead

With seven games left and a six-point deficit to overturn, survival is far from guaranteed. Borough will likely need multiple wins rather than draws, and King’s immediate focus will be on tightening the defence while restoring belief within the squad.

The appointment is as much about mentality as tactics. Eastbourne must rediscover resilience quickly, and King’s experience of high-pressure run-ins could prove decisive if Borough are to mount a late escape.

A Defining Period

The coming weeks will define Eastbourne Borough’s season -and potentially their short-term future. Relegation would represent a major setback after last year’s promise, while survival would stand as a remarkable turnaround given their current position.

For now, the club has made its move. Whether Steve King can deliver the response required will be revealed as Borough’s fight for National League South survival reaches its decisive stage.
