From Worthing To Marbella - The Sam Beard Story

Sam Beard's story at Worthing looked to be entering a new chapter rather than closing altogether. Having signed a new contract in May, extending the vice-captain's stay at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium ahead of a maiden National League campaign, few would have predicted his Woodside Road career would instead come to an end this summer. Yet an agreement has now been reached between Worthing and Spanish side CD Atlético de Marbella Paraíso for the defender's transfer, bringing a success-laden two-year spell with the Rebels to a close.

A fitting way to bow out

Beard's contribution to Worthing's rise cannot be understated. Across two seasons at the club, he made 69 appearances in all competitions, scoring his solitary goal for the club in that unforgettable 4-3 away win over West Sussex rivals Horsham. He became renowned for his bravery, tough tackling and uncompromising defensive style, qualities that helped earn him joint Manager's Player of the Year in his first season alongside skipper Joel Colbran, and the vice-captaincy that followed.

Last term brought its own test of character. After a strong start under Chris Agutter, Beard suffered a long-term knee injury shortly after Adam Hinshelwood's appointment, keeping him sidelined for four months. He returned to full fitness at exactly the right time, though, starting eight of Worthing's final nine matches as the club surged to the top of the National League South table with seven victories during a decisive run-in - a pivotal contribution to a historic title win.

New beginnings in Spain

The move takes Beard to a club with a story that mirrors Worthing's own in some respects. A phoenix club born from the ashes of the now-defunct CA Marbella in 2010, the senior set-up joined forces with the Marbella Paraíso academy in 2022 to form a more traditional football club structure. Beard's new employers achieved an identical historic promotion to the Reds only a few months ago, beating UD Maracena in the play-off final to reach the Tercera Federación — the fifth tier of Spanish football - for the first time in their existence.

Alongside playing duties, Beard will also take on a coaching role within the club's academy system, working across several teams and age groups — a natural next step given his experience and standing in the Worthing dressing room.
