A new football competition, the National League Cup, was developed and is set to debut this season. The Premier League and the National League are working together to provide a new competitive competition for National League clubs and to support the growth of younger players in a competitive environment.
The competition brings together 16 National League teams and 16 Premier League academy teams, namely Premier League 2's under-21 squads. To help young players develop, it is intended to provide them with opportunities to compete against more experienced teams.
The competition group stages will contain four groups of eight teams, with four National League teams and four Premier League under-21 teams. National League clubs will host the games, with it believed this will allow the fifth-tier sides to benefit financially from the gate receipts.
Teams will be competing for a £1 million prize fund that's provided by the Premier League. The money will be distributed among those National League clubs competing, providing much-needed financial support. It's said to be a mutually beneficial relationship, as it enhances the Premier League's commitment to developing young talent under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP).
It is said that the National League Cup will yield several advantages. The Premier League academies' young players experience the physical and tactical difficulties of playing against seasoned pros, and National League clubs get the opportunity to take on elite youth talent and compete for a sizeable cash reward. It should also improve relations between the Premier League and National League sides, potentially providing a pathway for developmental loans.
The inaugural tournament will start in October, with the group stages continuing onto January 2025, before culminating in an April final.
However, despite the positivity from the National League, many fans are not happy with the new tournament, citing the scrapping of FA Cup replays as a major reason for this dissatisfaction. Many fans believe that attendance will be at an all-time low for this competition, with the changes to the EFL Trophy causing similar backlash.
