Woking have appointed Jermain Defoe as their new manager, marking the former striker’s first permanent role in senior management. The appointment represents a new phase for the National League club as they look to build consistency and push forward during the latter part of the season.
Defoe replaces Neal Ardley, who departed earlier this month after a mixed run of results. Ardley had been tasked with steadying the club following a difficult period and largely succeeded, guiding Woking into mid-table and away from relegation concerns. However, a lack of sustained form this season prompted the club to reassess its direction. Coaching staff took charge on an interim basis while a long-term appointment was considered.
Founded in 1887, Woking FC have spent most of their history outside the Football League and are one of the more established clubs at National League level. The club’s most successful era came during the 1990s, when Woking were regular promotion challengers and lifted the FA Trophy on three occasions. Although league football has remained out of reach, the club has maintained its status as a competitive and resilient non-league side.
The current campaign has seen Woking occupy mid-table for long stretches. Performances have generally been solid, but inconsistency -particularly in attack - has limited their ability to put together a serious play-off challenge. With the table tightly grouped, the club remains within reach of the leading pack, and there is a belief that improved form over the final months could significantly change the outlook.
Defoe arrives with a wealth of experience from an extensive playing career. He scored over 300 senior goals and won more than 50 caps for England, establishing himself as one of the most reliable finishers of his generation. At club level, he enjoyed notable spells with Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Rangers, adapting to different leagues and environments throughout his career.
Towards the end of his playing days, Defoe began laying the foundations for a career in coaching. At Rangers, he combined playing duties with a mentoring role, working closely with younger players. Following retirement, he returned to Tottenham to coach at academy level and completed his coaching qualifications. His approach places emphasis on standards, professionalism and player development -qualities seen as particularly important in non-league football.

Defoe takes over a squad that is stable but in need of momentum. While expectations remain realistic, Woking will hope his experience and calm leadership can help deliver a strong finish to the season and provide a platform for longer-term progress. For Defoe, the role offers an opportunity to apply his knowledge in a demanding environment and begin shaping his identity as a manager.
