It’s been a couple of weeks now since footballing legend, Kevin Ellison, made his 1000th appearance, the second player to do it recently following fellow scouser Peter Clarke back in October last year for Prescot Cables.
Ellison reached the milestone playing for Vauxhall Motors, based in Ellesmere Port. The club have had success over the years, in particular when they defeated QPR in the first round proper of the FA Cup, but since relinquishing their conference status in 2014, have been flittering around the lower divisions of non-league.
Ellison has been with the club since 2024, after spells previously with Warrington Rylands, City of Liverpool and Runcorn Town, after finishing his football league career in 2022, with iconic moments for Newport County in the EFL play offs before dropping down the divisions.
Now at the age of 46, Ellison continues to play pretty much week in week out for the Motors, with no sign of slowing down.
This season, the Motormen are looking for a finish in the play offs spots of the Northern Premier League Division One West and sit a place outside of those destined spaces currently, in what is a hotly contested area this season. In fact, Motors are only 7 points off of top spot, but competition is stiff, with the likes of phoenix club, Bury, averaging nearly 3500 each week and sitting in the play offs too.
Ellison has already made 20 appearances this season for Vauxhall and has found the net on 3 occasions as well.
It’s incredible to see Ellison still have the love for the game that he does and continue to play at what is still, a fantastic level of football. So many would give everything to play just one game of Step 4 football and Ellison continues to put a dent into over 1000 appearances. I’m sure people wouldn’t be surprised if he went for 2000.
Ellison has been a key advocate for men’s mental health since opening up about his struggles with depression back in 2018, whilst he was at Morecambe. The forward has been very open and honest about his struggles and has given advice to his fellow professionals to try and combat what is a rife issue in the game.
There’s not many you’d rather see reach this milestone, a true servant of the game. Here’s to 1000 more, Kev!k
