Late Show of the Wrong Kind: Hednesford's Habit of Throwing Leads Away

Hednesford Town's first season back at Step 2 in a decade is off to a deeply painful start, and results from the last week suggest a worrying pattern is forming. After an opening day defeat, the Pitmen have now failed to hold onto a lead in back-to-back games, the latest example coming on Tuesday night as Southport snatched a stoppage-time equaliser at Keys Park to leave the game 2-2.

A tough opener at Merthyr

The campaign started poorly enough without any lead to lose. Hednesford went down 2-0 away at Merthyr Town on the opening day, with the new-look side, featuring just two survivors from last season's squad in Liam Kinsella and Sterling-James, finding themselves two goals down inside the opening half hour and unable to find a way back into the game despite an improved second-half showing.

From 3-1 up to a last-gasp equaliser

The following weekend brought a much more dramatic collapse. Playing their first home league game at this level since 2015/16, Hednesford led Scarborough Athletic 3-1 with just 17 minutes to go, only to concede three times in the closing stages and lose 4-3 in a chaotic, seven-goal thriller. Scarborough took an early lead through a stunning Luke Hall strike from just outside the box, but Hednesford hit back through two Omari Sterling-James penalties either side of a goal from Jamie Cooke. What followed was a collapse that stung for weeks to come. Scarborough won a penalty of their own, converted by Rio Allan, before substitute Jake Hull headed home an equaliser deep into stoppage time to snatch a point that felt more like three for the visitors.

Southport repeat the trick

If that result was concerning, Tuesday's follow-up against Southport continued the theme. Hednesford led through a Dylan Mottley-Henry goal on 44 minutes and doubled their advantage through Lenni Cirino on 67 minutes, seemingly cruising to a first win of the season at Keys Park. Instead, Southport hauled themselves level in a frantic finish, Daniel Ogwuru pulling one back right on 90 minutes before Sol Solomon completed the comeback deep into stoppage time to snatch a point Hednesford will feel they'd already banked.

A pattern that needs solving fast

Three games in, Hednesford have blown two separate leads and lost the other from behind, leaving them with just one point from a possible nine, a genuinely alarming start for a newly-promoted side that will already know how unforgiving a relegation battle can be at this level, having been relegated from here themselves back in 2015/16. The club's transition to full-time football this summer means an almost entirely rebuilt squad has had to gel fast, and three matches in, the concentration and game management needed to see out contests simply isn't there yet. Boss Kelvin Davis will be desperate to find defensive solidity and, just as importantly, some late-game composure before this becomes a full-blown crisis of confidence. With AFC Telford United up next away on Saturday, Davis needs a response, because two collapses from winning positions in a fortnight is no longer a blip, it's a habit, and habits like this have a way of deciding relegation battles come April.
