The Non-League FA Cup dream came to an end on Monday evening, as the final representative bowed out narrowly to Premier League opposition.
Macclesfield were beaten 1-0 at their Leasing.com Stadium home by Brentford, the second Premier League side the Silkmen faced during a memorable run.
You’d have had to be living under a rock to miss Macclesfield’s triumph over Crystal Palace in the previous round. An enthralling and richly deserved 2-1 home win saw the holders dumped out, a limp title defence from Oliver Glasner’s side.
John Rooney -brother of Wayne Rooney -led a side that fully earned their Crystal Palace victory, securing another glamour tie on home soil.
In fact, the Silkmen ventured away just once on their run- a second-round tie at Slough Town. At Arbour Park, Macclesfield went the distance, winning 3-1 after extra time.
After beating Crystal Palace, optimism remained high within the camp, helped by strong league form. A 5-1 home win over Kidderminster Harriers stood out as the highlight.
Brentford ultimately proved one hurdle too many, though not for lack of effort. A Sam Heathcote own goal was all that separated the sides, leaving Macclesfield hearts broken but full of pride.
In a classy post-match moment, Brentford manager Keith Andrews visited the home dressing room to congratulate the Macclesfield players. A notable gesture from a young manager in his first full season as a senior head coach.
Macclesfield may well have claimed the biggest scalp of this season’s FA Cup- arguably one of the biggest in the competition’s history -but they were not alone in flying the Non-League flag.
Weston-super-Mare joined the Silkmen in the third round, alongside perennial specialists Boreham Wood.
Further down the ladder, Maldon & Tiptree of Step 4 reached the first round proper, while Hemel Hempstead Town and Gainsborough Trinity were unlucky not to progress.
Once again, Non-League sides represented with distinction on the biggest stage — none more so than Macclesfield. Here’s hoping that next season, one of our clubs can go one step further than the fourth round.
