It’s been a week full of footballing stories, mainly with Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin scoring in the dying embers against Real Madrid to send Os Encarnados into the Champions League Play-Offs.
But he’s not the only goalkeeper to have saved his side with a dramatic late goal this week…
On Tuesday evening, Braintree Town made the long journey down to Cornwall, ready to face Truro City in the controversial National League Cup.
Fresh off the back of a 5-0 trouncing up at York City on Saturday, Braintree were looking to reignite some form against fellow strugglers, hoping to take that momentum back to Essex and into their league campaign.
However, the game didn’t go quite that way for them. After conceding in the 78th minute, it looked as if Braintree were set to fall out of the National League Cup…
That was until goalkeeper Mason Terry was sent forward in the 93rd minute.
The unlikeliest of sources arrived for a set-piece and managed to scramble the ball over the line in added time, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
The West Ham loanee wheeled away in jubilation after one hell of a goalmouth scramble — notching what was, of course, his first goal of the season and, as far as we’re aware, of his career.
Unfortunately for Terry, the celebrations were short-lived. His heroics in the dying moments proved to be the only ones he could muster, as Braintree went whimpering out on penalties — conceding three and missing all three of their own. Terry simply unable to do it all for his side.
Although Trubin takes the headlines this week, don’t forget young Mason Terry. Goalkeepers scoring goals always conjure up the very best feelings football has to offer.
Will a third goalkeeper strike this weekend? 👀⚽️
