Recently relegated Maidenhead host Worthing at York Road in what promises to be a fascinating clash in the National League South.
Eight seasons of punching above their weight in the National League came to an end in May, as Maidenhead were relegated back to the sixth tier. Alan Devonshire stayed on as manager, with the Magpies aiming for an instant return.
Life in the South started poorly: a 1-2 loss to Chesham was followed by draws against Enfield and Hemel Hempstead, before a defeat at Weston-super-Mare left them with just two points from four matches.
Since then, form has turned around. A 2-1 win over Horsham sparked a five-game winning run, including impressive victories over Maidstone (away) and Chelmsford (home).
Worthing have been upwardly mobile in recent years, reaching the play-offs in three consecutive campaigns. Last season, however, they fell short of promotion despite leading the league heading into the final weeks.
A summer of change saw several key players depart, including Danny Cashman, but Worthing’s recruitment has once again built a squad capable of competing near the top.
The Rebels started slowly, sitting 11th after an inconsistent run. They opened with a 1-1 draw against Bath (despite being down to ten men) before a thrilling 4-3 derby win at Horsham. That was followed by three games without a goal, including losses to Farnborough and Chippenham.
A tactical switch brought improvement, with a 3-3 draw at Maidstone, a 2-0 win over Salisbury, and a 5-2 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge. However, inconsistency remains – as shown in a 0-1 home defeat to Tonbridge.
To complicate matters, manager Chris Agutter has departed for Sutton United, leaving Dean Hammond in interim charge for this crucial trip to Maidenhead.
Maidenhead’s home matches have been full of entertainment – their four league games at York Road have produced 13 goals, with both teams scoring in every one.
Worthing are similarly attack-minded. While inconsistent, their clashes with Horsham, Maidstone and Dagenham alone produced 20 goals, highlighting their ability to thrive in open, attacking contests.
