Cornwall hosts Devon on Good Friday as Truro and Torquay face off at Langarth Garden Village. We have our match preview and betting predictions in this article.
Truro battled bravely against relegation last season and survived. This campaign they have surprised many and now sit atop of the league with three games to go. The Tinners are above Worthing on goal difference but have a tough couple of games coming up with the visit of Torquay, before having to face Weston Super Mare away on Monday.
John Askey's side have lost just once in their last 15 games, conceding two stoppage time goals to lose 3-2 away at Enfield. At home, they have lost just three times and are unbeaten since 14th December in front of the their own fans. The Tinners come into this off the back of three straight away games that included an impressive 1-2 win at second place Worthing to leapfrog The Rebels.
While a lot of the teams around them have larger budgets, Truro have been shrewd in the transfer market and are reaping the rewards. Torquay, Eastbourne Borough, Dorking and Worthing in particular have gained plaudits for their possession football, while Truro prefer the direct style. Defensively, they have been solid, boasting the second best defensive record in the league.
The strike partnership of Tyler Harvey and Jaze Kabia is amongst the best in the league. Harvey is joint top scorer with 24 goals, while Kabia has 16 goals to his name. Connor Riley-Lowe has been a mainstay in the Truro side since signing five years ago and now captains the side.
Torquay, like Truro, struggled last season and were battling against relegation due to a points deduction from going into administration. Changes behind the scenes and the appointment of Paul Wotton has moved the club in a new direction, with The Gulls sat in fourth, just three points off Saturday's hosts. While it is impossible for Torquay to be top by the close of play on Friday, a three goal win will see them leapfrog Truro before a home game against relegated Weymouth.
Away from home, The Yellows have the sixth best record in the league, accumulating 34 points from 21 games and are unbeaten in five, keeping a clean sheet in their last three and winning the last four. The reverse fixture was settled from a late Jordan Young goal, with Torquay winning 1-0. Another tight game is expected on Friday.
Torquay's key player is captain Sam Dreyer. The 22-year-old has been a rock at the heart of the defence and is crucial to any chance his side may have of shocking Truro.
Prediction: 1-1
