The final day of the National League North season promises drama at both ends of the table, with the title, play-off places, and relegation spots all yet to be decided.
A remarkable quirk of this season means that teams as high as 16th-placed Chorley are not yet mathematically safe. For the Magpies to suffer the drop, it would take an extraordinary chain of events: every team below them winning, combined with a heavy defeat to Worksop Town, inclusive of a 15-goal swing. Highly unlikely, but not impossible.
Hereford gave themselves a huge boost in midweek, snatching a last-gasp victory over Marine to put survival firmly in their own hands. Aaron Downes’ men now host already relegated Peterborough Sports at Edgar Street, with over 4,000 tickets sold for what will be their fourth consecutive home game.
Given Peterborough Sports’ 800 defeat to Worksop Town last weekend, Hereford will be confident of getting the job done in front of their supporters.
Bedford Town also look well placed to avoid the drop, thanks in large part to an excellent point away at South Shields last weekend. However, Lee Bircham’s final game in charge, following his decision to step down, comes against a highly motivated Scarborough Athletic side chasing a play-off berth. Again, unlikely, but Bedford, like Chorley, may still need results elsewhere to fall their way.
Oxford City sit just above Bedford and face a similarly tough test against Darlington, another play-off hopeful. The Hoops had been unbeaten in eight before defeat to Chester last weekend, and that run looks likely to ultimately prove enough to secure their safety.
King’s Lynn Town, meanwhile, could find themselves relying on others. They travel to an in-form Chester side who have surged since Connell Rawlinson took over from Calum McIntyre. Lynn will be without key players Ross Crane and Tom Wilson through suspension, and with a poor recent record against Chester, their situation looks precarious.
Should Alfreton Town or Curzon Ashton win, Lynn could be dragged into the bottom four.
That makes the clash between Alfreton Town and Curzon Ashton arguably the standout fixture of the day. Alfreton, unbeaten in six under Jake Buxton, have found form at the perfect time and will benefit from home advantage. Curzon, on the other hand, have struggled badly since Adam Barton’s appointment, winning just once in their last twelve matches. The Nash head into the final day in real danger.
At the top, the equation is simple.
If South Shields fail to beat Kidderminster Harriers, AFC Fylde will be crowned champions.
Goal difference could yet play a part; Shields sit on +57, Fylde on +59 - meaning both sides are likely to look to push on in attacking areas.
Fylde travel to Merthyr Town in a buoyant mood, having racked up 108 goals this season and coming into this off the back of a convincing 4–0 win over Southport.
However, Merthyr Town have plenty to play for themselves. Despite a dip in form following the notable departures of Ricardo Rees and Cole Jarvis, they need a win at Penydarren Park, and potentially favourable results elsewhere, to secure a play-off spot.
While Kidderminster Harriers and Macclesfield have already locked in third and fourth place respectively, the identity of their play-off opponents remains undecided.
Several sides, including Scarborough Athletic, Darlington, Chester, and Merthyr Town, are all jostling for position in what promises to be a frantic race for the top seven.
From potential miracle survivals to a title race that could hinge on a single goal, the National League North has set the stage for a dramatic finale.
Who will go up? Who will go down? And who will extend their season via the play-offs?
All will be decided in what promises to be an unforgettable final day.
