With Chesterfield securing the title and Oxford City being relegated relatively early in the season, much has been discussed on whether the Spireites could break Wrexham's record point tally. With that now out of reach, we have decided to look at other National League records and how close they were to being broken this campaign.
Wrexham- 34 (2022/2023)
Wrexham's star-studded team last season smashed many records as they won the National League in style. This season, Chesterfield have won 30 games, with four games left to look to equal the Red Dragons record.
3- Yeovil Town (2002/2003), Crawley Town (2010/2011), Wrexham (2022/2023)
Three teams have this record. It is a record that won't be broken this season as Chesterfield have already been defeated seven times.
12 - Burton Albion (2008/2009), Mansfield Town (2012/2013)
From August 28 to September 30th, Chesterfield went on a seven-game winning streak. A draw at Maidenhead was a blight on the record. Paul Cook's side followed this up by winning five in a row.
30- Crawley Town (2010/2011)
Crawley went a whopping 30 games unbeaten in their dominant National League title success. The longest unbeaten run for Chesterfield this season is 12, while Bromley also went 11 games without tasting defeat. However, the longest unbeaten run this season is from Solihull Moors who started the season 14 unbeaten.
117- Notts County (2022/2023)
Last campaign, Notts County averaged 2.54 goals per game as they smashed the goalscoring record. Chesterfield needs 16 goals in four games to match this - a feat that now seems unlikely.
24- Kettering Town (1993/1994), Stevenage Borough (2009/2010)
With the National League now more high-scoring than ever, this record does not look like getting beat again. Southend's 40 conceded is the current lowest in the league.
75- Notts County (2022/2023)
Last season, Notts County's 117 goals saw them accumulate a 75-goal difference. Chesterfields' goal difference is currently 44 - owing to their leaky defence.
111- Wrexham (2022/2023)
In a season that saw many records smashed, Wrexham won the league with 111 points. The most Chesterfield can get now is 107.
1- Dover (2021/2022)
During the 2020/2021 season, the team only played 15 fixtures, with none played after 30 January 2021, due to staff being furloughed because of the costs associated with the COVID pandemic. As a result, the club had all of its results expunged in March and w£40,000. In addition, the club was handed a 12-point deduction for the 2021/2022 season and fined £40,000 As of 29 May 2021, the club had released all but four players, who were reduced from full to part-time. Oxford City are currently bottom of the National League with 32 points.
0 - Colchester over Wycombe (94 points in 1991/1992)
Colchester edged Wycombe in a dramatic season in 1992.
19 - Luton Town over Cambridge (101 points - 82 points, (2013/2014)
In Luton's promotion campaign, they dominated the league at the start of their meteoric rise through the leagues. This year, Chesterfield is currently 20 points clear of Barnet.
