National League, North and South Football Preview - Easter Bank Holiday Weekend

It’s a double-bill bank holiday bonanza in National League football this weekend with important matches at the top and bottom of the tables.

All eyes will be on Stockport Town on Friday afternoon as the runaway leaders of the National League aim to extend their lead at Grimsby Town. Halifax Town will be looking to leapfrog Wrexham into second place as they travel to strugglers Altrincham.

However, the game of the weekend could be the match between Wrexham and Solihull Moors. There’s just three points between the two teams who are second and fourth-place in the National League table respectively, although Wrexham have a game in hand.

At the bottom of the table, King’s Lynn face an unlikely task of climbing out of the relegation zone with a tough battle against Notts County. Aldershot Town travel to Yeovil Town and it’s a game that they’ll need to get at least some points from if they wish to avoid getting sucked into a relegation dogfight. While Weymouth are looking increasingly likely to join Dover Athletic in getting relegated, they do face an inconsistent Maidenhead United which could be one of their last chances for survival.

Monday also sees some hugely important games in the National League. Match of the day is surely league leaders Stockport entertaining fellow high-flyers Solihull, while Wrexham and Halifax both have chances to strengthen their promotion hopes with games against Altrincham and Chesterfield respectively.

All to play for in the National League South

Maidstone will have to wait until Monday’s game against Dartford to see if they can extend their lead at the top of the National League South. While Maidstone have been in fine form, Dartford have struggled with inconsistency recently and it could be a key fixture in the battle for promotion.

Dorking Wanderers will face Chippenham Town on Friday as they aim to consolidate their second place in the table. This comes before Monday’s game that will give them much easier opposition when they travel to bottom of the table Welling United. It’s going to be a difficult bank holiday weekend for Welling who also face fifth-placed Eastbourne on Friday that’ll make it hard to catch up with fellow stragglers Billericay Town, Chelmsford and Bath City.

What to expect in the National League North

The National League North is all about the battle at the top between Brackley Town and Gateshead. Both teams have some massive games this bank holiday weekend. League leaders Brackley will surely beat Leamington on Friday to keep their one point advantage while Gateshead  are almost certain to hammer Guiseley who remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

However, things will get much tougher for the pair on Easter Monday. This is because Brackley entertain Boston United who’ll be keen to buck their mixed recent form to advance beyond seventh place in the table. Plus Gateshead will be hosting Darlington who have shown some strong form recently to sit just behind Boston and keep their eyes on a play-off spot. All of which should make for some fascinating bank holiday football.
