Paul Blackett Commits Future to South Shields Amid EFL Interest

South Shields FC have secured a major boost ahead of the new season by tying down star striker Paul Blackett to a new three-year contract, keeping him at Mariners Park until the summer of 2029. The deal ends months of speculation over his future, with the frontman having attracted interest from a number of clubs in the National League and EFL over the summer.

A Frontman Reborn on Tyneside

Blackett has established himself as one of the most feared strikers outside the top two divisions of non-league football since joining from Spennymoor Town in 2023. He has plundered 87 goals in 138 appearances across his three years at the club, with last season proving his most prolific yet as he hit 35 goals in all competitions. His numbers have earned him back-to-back individual honours, including National League North Player of the Year and the division's Top Goalscorer award.

The Williamson Connection

The appointment of Mike Williamson as head coach has added fresh motivation to Blackett's decision to stay. The pair worked together at Gateshead earlier in Blackett's career, when the striker was just breaking into the professional game under the former Newcastle United defender. That relationship appears to have played a part in persuading Blackett to commit his long-term future to the Mariners rather than test himself elsewhere.

Seeing Off Serious Competition

Interest in Blackett had been growing throughout the summer, with sources suggesting clubs from both the EFL and National League had made enquiries. Speaking after signing his new deal, Blackett praised the club for going "above and beyond" to keep him at Mariners Park, citing his comfort at the club and the goals he has scored there as key factors in his decision to stay.

Building for a Play-Off Push

With Blackett's future now resolved, attention turns to whether he can help fire South Shields into the play-offs after last season's near-miss under previous boss Ian Watson. Williamson has already strengthened his forward options with the additions of Sam Ashford and Adam Campbell, giving the Mariners strength in depth up front as they look to go one better in 2026/27.
