Hornchurch’s 2024/2025 season definitely went under the radar for many, but they are positioning themselves as a serious force in the National League South this season. After a solid ninth-place finish following their promotion from Step Three, they are building a team capable of challenging for the top spots. Under the guidance of Daryl McMahon, a manager I rate highly, they look set to be one of the most competitive sides in the league.
McMahon's track record speaks for itself. He had a successful spell at Ebbsfleet, earning them promotion and taking them to the National League playoff semifinals, followed by two near-misses with Dagenham & Redbridge. Now with Hornchurch, he has a team that is packed with experience and talent. Players like Sean Scannell, Angelo Balanta, and Darren McQueen will add a wealth of experience and leadership to the squad.
One of the main issues for Hornchurch last season was their goalscoring. They had the lowest number of goals in the top half of the table, which is something McMahon has clearly addressed in the off-season. The signing of Joe Taylor is a huge statement. The 34-year-old has been in prolific form, scoring a stunning 103 goals in two seasons at Ramsgate. The step-up to National League South is a big challenge, but Taylor has the pedigree to make an immediate impact.
McMahon has also secured Henry Hearn on a permanent deal from Millwall after an impressive loan spell. Hearn's eight goals and two assists in 17 appearances last season show his potential to make a real impact. At 20 years old, he brings some much-needed youthful energy and flair to the forward line alongside Taylor.
The signings of Charlie Ruff and Josh Rees are particularly noteworthy and show Hornchurch’s ambition. Ruff, a homegrown hero and FA Trophy winner, re-joins from Chelmsford after two fantastic seasons where he contributed 41 goals and assists in 62 appearances. His ability to break into the box and add goals from midfield will be vital for the team, alongside his ability to dictate play.
Josh Rees, another player with a strong scoring record, arrives after bagging 31 goals in the last two years in the National League, despite being part of a relegated Dagenham & Redbridge side. Rees’s goal-scoring ability from midfield will be crucial to Hornchurch’s success. If McMahon can find a way to fit these two into the same midfield setup, Hornchurch should have no problems putting goals on the board this season.
Defensively, Hornchurch are solid. The addition of Josh Hare from Boreham Wood, who played a key role in their promotion, is a brilliant signing. At 37, Dave Winfield brings vast experience to the defence, adding leadership and a strong presence at the back. His experience at Welling will only benefit the team, as he adds stability and maturity to the squad. With Harry Gibbs looking to stay after impressing over the last couple of seasons, Hornchurch will be well-stocked in defence.
However, the lack of quality out wide could be a problem. Razzaq Coleman-De-Graft has moved to Worthing, which leaves a bit of a gap. If McMahon can bring in the right wide players, Hornchurch could be real dark horses for the top spots.
With their strong spine and the additions made, they certainly have the potential to be contenders in National League South this season.
Prediction: 3rd
