This has all the makings of a non-league classic- arguably the biggest game many fans will ever witness at this level. League leaders York, sitting on 107 points, make the trip to second-placed Rochdale on 105, with only one automatic promotion place available. I won’t dive into the wider 3UP 3DOWN debate, but it’s hard to ignore that one of these sides is going to feel desperately unfortunate when the dust settles.
York arrive in devastating attacking form. The Minstermen have racked up a staggering 113 goals across 45 matches, winning 33 times. Momentum is firmly with them too, having won five in a row and eight of their last nine. That surge allowed them to move ahead after Rochdale stumbled over the Bank Holiday weekend, collecting just a single point from games against Morecambe at home and Hartlepool away.
Rochdale’s campaign has largely been built on defensive resilience, but cracks have begun to show as the stakes have risen. Jimmy McNulty’s side have managed only one clean sheet in their last nine matches, with eight of those fixtures producing at least three goals.
York have been involved in more high-scoring games than any other side in the division, with Over 2.5 Goals landing in 33 of their 45 league outings. That trend extends to Spotland too, where 14 of 22 matches have cleared the same line.
Despite this, the Over 2.5 Goals price sits at 4/5, suggesting the market expects a cautious, cagey contest from Stuart Maynard’s side. I’m not convinced that approach plays to York’s strengths, and I’d expect them to take the game to Rochdale rather than sit back.
The goalscorer markets look tight, offering limited value. Josh Stones at 6/4 was tempting, but instead I’ve turned to York’s influential centre-back, Malachi Fagan-Walcott. The former Tottenham academy graduate has chipped in with eight goals in 35 appearances this season.
In a contest likely to be settled by the finest of margins, the First/Last Goalscorer market feels the smarter angle. Of Fagan-Walcott’s eight goals this term, three have been the final goal of the game and two have been the opener — including a dramatic 96th-minute winner against Altrincham.
