With three of the four teams relegated from the National League being based in the south, AFC Fylde are the only one dropping into the National League North — a division they’ve consistently dominated whenever they've played in it. In their five previous seasons at this level, Fylde have finished 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 3rd, and 1st.
Following a disastrous National League campaign, the club released eight players. Despite this, they’ve managed to retain a strong core, including several standout performers.
Nick Haughton has left the club for Forest Green. He would have been, without doubt, the best player in the division. He’s scored 26, 26, 18, and 19 goals in his last four seasons, the latter two coming in the National League. His departure is a massive blow.
Youngster Taelor O’Kane is a fantastic talent and is expected to form a solid midfield partnership with Ethan Mitchell. Jon Ustabaşı, who signed a new contract last year, brings vital experience at this level, while Charlie Jolley — a hard-working forward with EFL experience — should thrive with the step down in competition. I had high hopes for him previously and expect him to shine now.
There’s plenty of excitement around youngsters Lincoln McFayden and Danny Ormerod, both of whom could flourish in the National League North. Watching their development will be one to keep an eye on.
I absolutely love Craig Mahon as manager. I was a big fan of his work at Curzon Ashton — he's a smart appointment and has a proven track record in developing players.
One long-standing issue Fylde have faced is the lack of a consistent No. 1 goalkeeper. Zac Jones looks like a great solution after three stellar seasons with Haverfordwest in Wales.
In terms of new signings, Chris Merrie is an excellent pick-up for this level — a tough-tackling, versatile midfielder. Max Taylor, a dependable centre-back with EFL pedigree and a background at Manchester United’s academy, adds real quality to the backline. Finally, George Wilson brings class to the midfield after making 69 appearances over two seasons with National League side Altrincham.
It would be foolish to rule AFC Fylde out — they have the best player in the division in Nick Haughton and a brilliant new manager in Craig Mahon. This is a league they’ve consistently dominated over the years. However, with a significant squad turnover, a new managerial setup, and lingering uncertainty over whether Haughton will stay, I think they might just fall short and get pipped to the title.
Prediction: 3rd
