Williamson handed the South Shields job as new era takes shape

A new chapter at South Shields now has a manager to lead it. Mike Williamson, once a defender with Newcastle and Wolves, has taken over as head coach at the National League North club following Ian Watson’s move to Rochdale, the newly promoted League Two side.

A short step up, not a gamble

The decision came quickly once Watson left, but it never looked like a gamble on an unknown. Williamson had already been embedded at Mariners Park for around half a year, joining first as a coach under Watson and then taking up a fresh role overseeing performance and culture. Stepping into the lead role is the natural next move.

He has been here before, of course ,and not always with happy endings. His most recent spell in charge, at Carlisle, was cut short after 25 matches as the club drifted towards the drop, and he later spent a short period helping Russell Martin at Rangers. The wider managerial story is uneven: a National League North title at Gateshead and a move up to MK Dons on one side, criticism of his cautious approach at Carlisle on the other.

New owners, fresh ambition

Crucially, the appointment lands just days into a shift in who owns the club. A consortium fronted by ORY Investment Holding has bought a controlling stake, while long-serving chairman Geoff Thompson keeps a meaningful shareholding. The group is already thinking internationally, with Thompson recently flying out to China to look at potential academy and commercial tie-ins.

Thompson left little doubt about his faith in the appointment, calling Williamson the standout choice and pointing to his grasp of where the club is heading. Supporters have been harder to read. Reaction online split sharply within hours, some unimpressed, others pointing to his track record at this level.

A promising inheritance

What he takes on is promising rather than broken. The Mariners were in the mix at the top last season before missing out in both the title chase and a play-off final defeat to Kidderminster.

It all fits a restless summer across the region, with Gateshead, Carlisle and Hartlepool each making changes of their own. Gateshead gave Lee Cattermole his first job in the dugout after Rob Elliot departed for Carlisle, while Hartlepool appointed Lee Clark under fresh American ownership. Money and ambition are flowing through North East non-league football right now.

Williamson’s brief is straightforward to state and hard to deliver: turn the club’s growing resources and a play-off-ready squad into the promotion that keeps slipping away - and convert the doubters along the way.
