Originally started as a way to unite the nations of Europe after WW2, the Eurovision Song Contest has become an annual celebration of the weird, wacky, and wonderful. It brings together 50 European countries (plus a few invited guest nations) to showcase their national (ahem) talent.
With another successful Eurovision contest in the bag, all eyes will be looking to next year's tournament which will be held in Bulgaria.
Dara was the winner of the 70th Eurovision Contest as Bulgaria won the competition for the first time. Dara won with the popular and catchy 'Bangaranga' and become the first act to top the Judges votes and the Public vote since 2017.

Good evening Europe! What is the Eurovision Song Contest?
In the very first Eurovision Song Contest, held in 1956, seven nations came together to take part in an internationally televised singing contest. Each nation sang two songs, but victory eventually went to Switzerland.
Cut ahead 75 years and the contest has grown to include 50 European nations and several non-European countries, especially invited to join in with the fun, such as Israel and Australia.
The so-called
Big Five
countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the UK), who contribute the most financially to Eurovision, gain automatic admission to the final of the competition. They’re also joined by the previous year’s winner. The rest of the entrants have to earn their place by qualifying in two semi-finals before the live final.
Held in May each year, the live Eurovision final sees singers and groups from 26 countries competing to bring home the trophy, and national glory.
New customers: Deposit £10+ within 7 days and place a sports bet. Get 4 x £10 Free Bets (2 x £10 Bet Builders & 2 x £10 Sports Bet). Valid 7 days. Min odds apply. Excludes virtual sports, esports and non-UK/IE horse racing. 18+. T&Cs apply.

London calling! How is the Eurovision vote decided?
The winner of Eurovision is decided by a combination of public votes and points awarded by a panel of industry experts from each participating country (including those who didn’t make the live final).
During the final, each country awards their allocation of points up to a maximum of 12 (douze points!) for their nation’s favourite song (no voting for your own country though).
Eurovision betting markets

option and there are a massive range of betting markets available across all Eurovision betting sites. To see other novelty betting markets, check out our latest guides, including our list of the best

Choosing the winner: the most popular Eurovision betting option is to choose the ultimate winner of the contest.
Picking the victors of the semi- finals: you might also choose to make a wager on the winners of the two semi-finals, or even stake on who won’t make it through to the live final.
Go each way: If you’re not confident of the winner, you can choose to make an each way bet on countries finishing in the top four, six, or ten places.
Pick the dreaded
nul points: Eurovision is all about peace and togetherness, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to win! Every nation faces a cold and clammy wait as the points are awarded, hoping to avoid the shameful
nul point
position. This makes another popular betting option, and if you’re looking for a pick, then the UK has come last at Eurovision four times, including receiving
nul points
in 2003 and 2021.

Understanding the Eurovision betting odds - when are the odds released?
The final of the 2024 competition will be held in Sweden but details about the location and staging won’t be released until closer to the time. Before the competition starts, bookmakers will release odds on potential favourites, as well as songs that could cause an upset. It's a similar situation with
betting on the Glastonbury Festival, we know when and where, but who will play remains a mystery until closer to the time.

Double winners and always coming second - Eurovision betting stats
Eurovision has spawned some truly memorable musical memories, as well as some scandalous moments! Have a look at our key betting facts, and sauciest moments, from Eurovision history:
Ireland has won the contest seven times, which is more than any other nation. However, after a record breaking three consecutive wins in the 1990s, they have failed to make the live final since 2021.
One of the most unforgettable entrants in recent years was Ukraine’s Verka Serduchka. Serduchka, a drag queen who performed in a sequin covered, glitter ball inspired, Christmas tree topping dress, took her very catchy tune, ‘Dancing Lasha Tumbai’, all the way to the silver position.
Only two contestants have ever won the competition more than once: 2023’s winner, Loreen from Sweden, and Ireland’s Johnny Logan.
Several countries have never won the competition, including Hungary, Iceland, and Lithuania.
Italian entrants Måneskin romped to victory in 2021 but their win was surrounded in controversy when it was alleged that they were seen taking drugs live on air.
The best song that never won has to be ‘Think about Things’ from Iceland’s Daði Freyr. The song was a huge viral hit, had its own dance routine, and was a shoo-in to win but unfortunately, it never made it to the final in 2020 as the Covid Pandemic meant the event was cancelled.
The UK has won the Eurovision Song Contest five times, and been a runner up 16 times.
Famous winners of Eurovision include ABBA, Celine Dion (who represented Switzerland), and Conchita Wurst, who appeared in a long dress and full beard in 2006, striking a blow for equality and delivering a banging song.
