Arsenal and Brighton both return to Premier League action on Sunday following their midweek exploits in Europe. The Gunners dropped off top spot last weekend with defeat away at surprise title challengers Aston Villa. The Seagulls are keen to prove to everyone that they are a top-six side in the division. Victory over Arsenal would see them as a real threat this season.
Arsenal could return to the top of the Premier League with a win over Brighton and a massive favour from Manchester United when they take on Liverpool at Anfield.
Mikel Arteta’s men know too well that you cannot rely on help from anyone, but anything apart from a Reds win – coupled with three points against Brighton – would see the Gunners head into their December 23 clash against Liverpool with a slight advantage.
That loss to Villa was their first Premier League defeat in five matches and saw a run of four consecutive victories come to an end.
The Gunners have no suspensions ahead of this game, but Mohamed Elneny is almost certain to miss out after picking up a hamstring problem against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
Brighton could be playing Champions League football next season. Stranger things have happened.
The Seagulls are a great example of just getting on with the job at hand. Over the years they have lost the likes of Leandro Trossard, Alexis Mac Allister and Robert Sanchez, but they seem to replace them with players just as good.
Brighton are currently eighth on the ladder with 26 points. They are only seven points behind Manchester City in the fourth and final Champions League spot.
The visitors have drawn two, won two and lost one of their last five Premier League matches. If they could put a run together, then there is no reason why they cannot be pushing for a place in the top four at the end of the season.
Former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck is still on the injured list with a muscle problem, although he is very close to a return. Joao Pedro is expected to start and he has scored three goals in his last five league matches.
Arsenal have beaten Brighton 11 times and have been on the losing side eight times. The last time Arsenal won on home soil in a league match against Brighton was in 2021 thanks to a 2-0 success. The Seagulls have won on their last three visits to the Emirates with two league wins and one in the Carabao Cup. Arsenal’s last victory over Brighton was on the road on New Year’s Eve last season.
Brighton seem to have the edge over Arsenal in recent matches, but I feel the mentality under Arteta is changing and they are more determined to get results against teams they are fully expected to beat. Check out these stats and best betting odds ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Our Betting Tip for Today- Arsenal to win & BTTS - 9/5 @ Betfred
Arsenal are the home side and are favourites to win the game at 4/9. The draw can be backed at 7/2, which is not out of the question. It would take a monumental effort for Brighton to beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and that is reflected in the price of 11/2 on that happening.
Arsenal have scored in all but one of their last five Premier League matches. They have also kept just one clean sheet in that time as well. I am backing the Gunners to win the game over 90 minutes, but I expect Brighton to find the back of the net as they have scored in every Premier League match this season.
