Aston Villa welcome defending Premier League champions Liverpool to Villa Park on Friday evening for what should be an intriguing FA Cup third round tie.
Aston Villa were beaten 2-1 at the weekend by Manchester United in the Premier League, a result that brought to an end their run of five games without defeat. The first four games of that run included four clean sheets – a sign of real defensive strength. The Villans will be looking to take inspiration from the last time they played the Reds back in October. Villa won 7-2 at home that day.
Liverpool last won on December 19 in the Premier League when they thrashed Crystal Palace 7-0. Since then they have drawn 1-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion and 0-0 away at Newcastle. At the weekend, though, they were beaten 1-0 away at Southampton, something that will concern manager Jurgen Klopp. The last time the Reds faced Villa in a cup competition, a makeshift team of youngsters was beaten 5-0 in last season’s League Cup.
There have been some interesting results between these teams in recent times. The 7-2 Villa victory in the Premier League this season is one of those. If you think that the game will be another high-scoring affair then Unibet are offering odds of 31/20 on there being more than 3.5 goals on Friday evening. Apart from their two heavy recent victories, one of which was over a seriously weakened Reds team, Villa have lost four out of their last six games against Liverpool.
The last time these teams met in the FA Cup was in 2015 at Villa Park, and the home side won 2-1 that day. We’re predicting the same scoreline this time in favour of the West Midlanders – Unibet are offering odds of 19/2 on us turning out to be right.
