To start the week off we have a cracking Monday night fixture between Aston Villa and Liverpool and this is a really intriguing game at this time of the season. Liverpool have secured Champions League football but aren’t exactly in the title race so they haven’t got much to gain or lose here, whilst Aston Villa will secure Champions League football if they manage to beat Liverpool at home.
The bookies have priced up Aston Villa at 3/1 to win at home, you can get 7/2 for the draw and a Liverpool win is just 7/10 so it does seem quite one sided. That being said, both teams have plenty of class and can certainly cause each other problems so we are in for a treat on Monday night. I have a betting suggestion but before we go on to my selection, let’s have a look at both sides.
This has been a superb season for Aston Villa and a win here would be the icing on the cake as the club would secure Champions League football for next season. At the time of writing this we don’t know the result of the Saturday fixture between Tottenham and Burnley and a loss for Tottenham would see Aston Villa secure the Champion League spot too, but as it stands Aston Villa need the win still on Monday night so full focus is on the big game. They come into this after losing away to Brighton but aside from that game, Aston Villa have been superb and even got a win over Arsenal last month so confidence will be very high. They play attractive football and certainly have enough quality to cause Liverpool problems on Monday evening.
Liverpool have again secured Champions League football for next season but they have ultimately been disappointing in the later stages of the title race. They have nothing to gain or lose really by winning this fixture so we don’t know what sort of squad Jurgen Klopp will set out but considering this is his farewell Tour, perhaps he has nothing to lose and will just play a full strength squad. If that is the case then Liverpool are definitely the right favourites but they have been vulnerable in defence recently so Aston Villa will fancy their chances. Liverpool may end up having too much firepower but they will need to be solid at the back against an Aston Villa side very much on the up.

Liverpool have dominated the head to heads in recent years winning 4 of the last 5 but Aston Villa weren’t playing at the level they are currently so it may not be a fair reflection coming into this game. Liverpool are clearly still the right favourites, but Aston Villa have just continued to improve this season and are certainly not out of this. With so much at stake in this game for Aston Villa, I wouldn’t look too much into previous match history and Instead I’d make your suggestion on this season's exploits. We have a cracking game coming our way.
We have a seriously competitive game here on Monday night and the stats all point towards a Liverpool win, but at this stage of the season there are a lot of things to consider. One of them is the strength in team Liverpool will put out, there is also the vulnerability in Liverpool's defence recently and of course there is potentially a lot more on the line for Aston Villa in this game. It is also worth considering that Aston Villa have played very well against the top teams this season so it may not be as clear cut as the bookies make it.
After looking at both of the sides it is clear Liverpool are the team to beat but they are a short price to win away from home. Both sides are in the top 4 so they clearly have an abundance of talent and there is a lot on the line for this Aston Villa squad. The go too team is of course Liverpool in the match bet, but I think this could be a close encounter on Monday and I think Aston Villa will get on the score sheet so if they are strong in defence, then they could be up for causing an upset.
The Monday night fixture is a belter between Aston Villa and Liverpool and both teams have a chance of taking all three points out of this one. Liverpool have been seriously good up front as usual but with that vulnerability in defence, I think Aston Villa will really fancy their chances in this one. They play with enough creativity to cause most teams problems and even though Liverpool keep coming from behind to win, I think Aston Villa will have the quality to hold on and at least take something from this game.
They have been strong all season long throughout the pitch and it was topped off by winning away at Arsenal and I think they can go close against Liverpool as well. I think you could afford to have a punt on the draw here but I am very tempted by the 9/1 on offer for 2-2. I can certainly see both teams scoring and I expect an end to end game of football here. 9/1 is plenty of value.
