At the start of the Premier League season, not many people would have thought that Wednesday's game between Aston Villa and Manchester City would be a fourth versus third battle. Well, it is and victory for the home side would see them move above the defending champions and closer to league leaders Arsenal.
Since becoming Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has worked wonders with this team and if they can get a result against City, then the Champions League dream will be well and truly alive.
Aston Villa are unbeaten at Villa Park this season. That is some going seeing as we are in December. Their only three defeats have come on the road against Newcastle United, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
They have lost one of their last five matches and are unbeaten in three. They could have moved into third place on Sunday had they defeated Bournemouth, but they had to settle for a point as they twice had to come from behind with Ollie Watkins saving their blushes with a 90th minute equaliser.
Bertrand Traore, Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia are all expected to miss the game through injury. Any hopes of getting something from the game against Man City will rely at Watkins' door. The England international has scored eight goals in the Premier League and has scored in three consecutive matches.
Man City have not won in the Premier League since they hammered Bournemouth. They have gone three games without a win, they have all been draws but it is still cause for concern.
The Blues will always score goals. They have scored 17 goals in their last five league games, but they have conceded nine. That might not seem to0 bad, but eight of them come have come in their three consecutive draws. City pride themselves on strong defence, so conceding that many goals is quite unusual.
John Stones has not played a lot of minutes because of injury this season and has been an unused substitute in their last three matches. If Stones is fit then he needs to play. He will shore up that defence and will prevent them from conceding so many.
City will be without the suspended pairing of Jack Grealish and Rodri, while Kevin de Bruyne is still over a month away from returning from a hamstring injury he picked up against Burnley in the first game of the season.
Man City have had the edge over Aston Villa in recent years. The Blues have won five of their last six Premier League meetings with one ending in a draw.
Aston Villa have not beaten Man City since they recorded a 3-2 win at Villa Park in September 2013. They have gone over 10 years without beating City - that is a run of 15 games in all competitions without a single victory.
Villa did manage to take a point off City in their last meeting at Villa Park. Erling Haaland put City ahead five minutes after half-time, before Leon Bailey rescued a point 15 minutes from time.
Man City certainly know how to beat Aston Villa, whether they can do it again and get their title push back on track remains to be seen. Check out all the available betting odds on Aston Villa versus Man City before you place your bets.
Our Betting Tip for Today- Phil Foden to score at any time & Man City to win - 7/2 @ Ladbrokes
Despite having not won any of their last three Premier League matches, Man City remain favourites to beat Aston Villa. They have a good record at Villa Park and can be backed at 4/6 to claim the win. Villa are 13/5 to grab a first win over City in over a decade, while the draw is available at 14/5.
A team like Man City does not stay down for long. This little blip they are on will be of no real concern to Pep Guardiola (the conceding of goals might), and I expect them to get past Villa with relative ease.
Yes, Villa are in the top four, but they are not in the Champions League just yet. If they are to qualify for that competition, then they need to be taking three points off the teams around them. I cannot see that happening on a regular basis.
Phil Foden seems to be getting better and better. He has scored four goals in the Premier League this season and scored a crucial goal in their 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. His link-up play with the likes of Haaland and Julian Alvarez is good to watch.
I am backing the England international to add another goal to his tally on the way to three points for the champions.
