As we reach the end of January, Aston Villa are still genuinely in the Premier League title picture. They are fourth at the moment and are only five points behind league leaders Liverpool and are level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal. The Premier League title might not be the most realistic goal for Villa, but they could still claim a Champions League spot. They take on a Newcastle United side who have been hindered by injuries all season and they occupy 10th position and are 14 points outside the top four.

Not many people would have predicted that Aston Villa would be fourth on the Premier League ladder as we head into February, but they are and victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday night would boost their chances of playing in the Champions League next season.

It would be great for the Premier League if Aston Villa won the title, but realistically it will probably be either Liverpool, City or Arsenal who will finish top. Villa will fight to the end though as they attempt to keep the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Brighton behind them.

Villa have won two of their last five matches in the Premier League with their only defeat coming in a five-goal thriller at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

Manager Unai Emery has a few injury problems going into this game with Jhon Duran, Jacob Ramsey, Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia all still on the treatment table.

Newcastle United are struggling to get 11 fit players on the field at the moment and that has shown in their recent Premier League matches.

The last time the Magpies picked up three points was before Christmas when they defeated Fulham. Since then, they have lost four league matches in succession including to Luton Town and Nottingham Forest.

Manager Eddie Howe is not in any danger regarding his future because of the job he did last season, but it is concerning for their fans that they have been dumped out of the Champions League and have now slumped to 10th in the league. Their only real chance of any silverware this season is to win the FA Cup.

Howe seems to have more players in the medical room than he does in the dressing room. Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron are just four of the 10 players missing through injury.

Newcastle United have the upper hand over Aston Villa in their meetings over the years. The Magpies have won 68 out of their 156 encounters with Villa winning 51.

These two have already met this season with Newcastle running out 5-1 winners, but it is safe to say that Villa have improved greatly since that day in August.
