Whether or not Aston Villa can stay in the Premier League title hunt until the end of the season remains to be seen, but it will be fun watching them. Unai Emery’s men have been a breath of fresh air this year and they are not afraid to mix it up with the so-called big boys. They take on a Sheffield United side who are rock bottom of the division still searching for their first away victory of the campaign.

Not even the most ardent of Aston Villa supporters would have believed they would be in the top four of the Premier League heading into Christmas. It could all come crashing down over the festive period, but for now, they are riding a massive wave and taking some big scalps with them.

Villa have won their last three Premier League matches and have not tasted defeat in the league since they were beaten 2-0 away at Nottingham Forest. They have since gone six games without a loss and five of them have been victories.

Emery has been dealt a massive blow ahead of the game against Sheffield United. Boubacar Kamara will sit this one out after he was shown a red card in the win over Brentford. He will be joined in the stands by Robin Olsen, Bertrand Traore and Tyrone Mings who are all out injured.

Let’s be honest, Sheffield United were always going to struggle this season following their promotion from the Championship. This is not a dig at the Blades, I am just being honest. They do not have the financial power to match the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, nor have they invested in the squad to any great degree compared to other teams.

The Premier League table does not lie. They are rock bottom with just eight points thanks to two wins and two draws. They haven’t even picked up the number of points that Everton have been docked.

Since United sacked Paul Heckingbottom and brought back Chris Wilder, things have improved slightly. Some fans are more optimistic now the prodigal son has returned, but is he good enough to get them out of trouble?

The Blades are still missing John Egan, Tom Davies and Chris Basham, but even with a full squad, I couldn’t see them beating a team like Villa this season.

Sheffield United might have won three of the last six meetings in all competitions between these two teams, but Villa have the edge overall.
