The first international break of the season is almost underway, with exciting qualifiers that will have World Cup implications. We’ll be focusing on the Group E clash between Belarus and Wales as they both look to close-in on group leaders Belgium.
Belarus have had a polarising start to their World Cup qualifiers. They had a perfect start with a 4-2 victory over Estonia on match day one. However, their weaknesses were amplified by an 8-0 defeat to Belgium. Belarus have the joint-worst goal difference in the division after conceding ten in two matches.
Head Coach Georgi Kondratiev has selected a relatively inexperienced squad heading into the qualifiers. Every defender selected has less than 10 caps, including four players who have one or less.
They do have experience in both the midfield and attack. Striker Maksim Skavysh is the highest scorer in the squad with four goals and may break the 30 cap mark during this international break.
Wales enter this international break after reaching the knockout stages of the European Championships. Wales finished second in Group A before being well-beaten by Denmark in the round of 16.
They have started their World Cup qualifiers similarly to Belarus with three points from two matches. Wales lost to Belgium in the opening game before securing a narrow victory over 10-man Czech Republic.
Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson has been recalled after missing the European Championships. However, key midfielder Aaron Ramsey is missing for the Welsh Dragons for the upcoming fixtures.
This fixture has a very one-sided history. Wales have been victorious in four of the last five matches between the two but the game is usually goal-shy. The teams have been separated by a single goal in their previous five encounters despite Belarus’ leaky defence as of late.
Belarus are five games without a clean sheet and the Belarusians poor defence leads them to be involved in games that have more than 2.5 goals. Contrastingly Wales haven’t been involved in many high scoring games recently. So, these two statistics should level out.
Wales are the favourites entering this encounter and are likely to pick up the victory away from home. However, the stats suggest a close game despite Belarus’ recent Belgian embarrassment. We’re therefore suggesting a Wales win with under 3.5 goals with Betfair at 5/6.
