David Wagner’s Schalke 04 side make the short trip to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday as the Bundesliga recommences with another edition of the Revierderby. There would normally be a crowd of 80,000 in place at the Signal Iduna Park, but the atmosphere will be somewhat muted this weekend with the stadium doors closed. You can read all about the betting action on offer in the game here, and we’ll also give you a few tips on how this potentially thrilling game might turn out.
Lucien Favre’s Dortmund team will be looking to maintain their pressure on top-of-the-table Bayern Munich this weekend. Erling Haaland is one man to keep an eye on. The Leeds-born Norwegian striker has hit nine goals since joining Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in the January transfer window. The Black and Yellows have a potent attack, with English wiger Jadon Sancho providing the assists for Haaland. Betway are offering odds of 2.50 on Sancho assisting in one or more goals on Saturday. Marco Reus is still out of action with a thigh injury, and Emre Can and Axel Witsel are also out of action.
English readers will be familiar with Schalke coach David Wagner after his recent spell with Huddersfield Town in the Premier League. Schalke have had a long wait for a win in the Bundesliga, with their last victory coming on January 17, when they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0. Also of interest to English punters will be how Jonjoe Kenny performs. The England U-21 man has never been on the losing side in either a Merseyside derby or a Revierderby. Utility man Weston McKennie is another man to watch. He hit his second goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim before the suspension of the league.
One key stat that punters should note before placing any wagers on this game is that Haaland and Sancho have scored more Bundesliga goals between them in 2024 than the entire Schalke team. Wagner’s team have only netted four times in 2024, while Sancho and Haaland have five and nine goals to their names respectively in this calendar year so far. Before the break for the current health crisis, Dortmund had won four league games in a row for the first time this season. Dortmund do not have a great recent history against their Revierderby rivals, despite their current lofty position in the league. Victories have been hard to come by for the Black and Yellows against Schalke. The last clash between the teams was earlier this season, back in October. It ended 0-0 at the Veltins Arena. In the last clash at Dortmund, last season in April 2019, The Royal Blues ran out 4-2 winners.
Amine Harit could be a man to watch for the Royal Blues. The attacking midfielder has scored six goals and produced four assists in the 2019/20 season so far, meaning that he has had a direct hand in more goals than any of his team-mates in the current campaign. He hasn’t scored in 13 games or provided an assist in 10, however. Schalke fans will be hoping that he can rediscover some form on Sunday. Recent history may give the Royal Blues’ fans some reason for optimism, though. They have lost only one of their last eight derby meetings with Dortmund. Out of that run of eight games, Schalke have won two and drawn five of those Revierderby clashes. That makes the odds of 5.25 on offer at Betway for both teams to score and the game to end in a draw look tempting.
Schalke have not won for seven Bundesliga matches, which is the current longest run of any team in the league. It is also their longest winless run under the management of David Wagner. They will hope their luck changes this weekend.
Our recommended tip for this game comes from Betway, who are offering odds of 8.00 on the game finishing 1-1. We think that this is a good bet, as Dortmund’s recent record against their Revierderby rivals is not that great. The pause in the season will also have drained some of the momentum from Favre’s team, while Wagner’s men might have been glad of a bit of a break. A low scoring draw therefore looks the likeliest result for this game, especially as there will be a strange atmosphere behind closed doors.
