After a three week break from Premier League football, Bournemouth and Liverpool are back in action again this Sunday. The hosts are looking to build on their strong start to the season under Spaniard Andoni Iraola, as they push towards the top half. Liverpool on the other hand are looking to build some breathing room at the top of the Premier League as treble winners Manchester City are hot on the Reds tail. We are in for an intriguing battle on the South Coast and we have some best bets for you to feast on.
Bournemouth endured a turgid start to the season, failing to win any of their opening nine league games, before a 2-1 win over relegation threatened Burnley gave them momentum. Since then, the Cherries have only lost two of their next nine games- with these defeats coming away at Manchester City and Tottenham.
In this impressive run, Iraola's team have beaten Manchester United away, beaten Newcastle at home and drawn at home to Aston Villa, and they will be fancying their chances to add the scalp of Liverpool to their repertoire.
The South Coast club occupy 12th place, but are closer in points to 7th placed Manchester United than 18th placed Luton, so they've seemed to arrest any early season relegation worries.
Despite a poor 2022-2023 season for their standards, Liverpool look in good shape to add to their singular Premier League title. Jurgen Klopp has added a freshness to his side, with the plethora of attacking options providing a regular selection headache for the German.
The Reds only Premier League defeat thus far came at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, where Liverpool went down to nine men in a controversial affair. They currently sit two points clear of nearest challengers Manchester City who are boosted by the returns of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.
Liverpool need points to stretch their lead at the top, but face a tough battle against Bournemouth and have to cope without top scorer Mo Salah who is on AFCON duty with Egypt.
Bournemouth have endured a tough run of results against Liverpool, winning just one and losing nine of the last ten meetings, for an aggregate score of 33-4. Therefore, Liverpool are averaging 3.3 goals per game vs Bournemouth over this stretch.
This number is exaggerated by the 9-0 win in 2022, but the Reds have still scored 2+ in 9/10 of these games- the exception the 1-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium last season.
As mentioned, it has not been a pretty few years for Bournemouth against Liverpool, with Liverpool dominating the fixture from start to finish in the majority of last ten meetings. With that in mind, take a look at three statistical highlights to consider when choosing bets.
Despite Liverpool beating Bournemouth twice this season already and their run of form against the Cherries, it will be a tougher game for Liverpool than the odds suggest. Andoni Iraola is known for big scalps in his time at Spain, and he will looking to test Liverpool from minute one. Bournemouth to avoid defeat presents real value, especially given Bournemouth's recent run of form.
As mentioned, Bournemouth have been in tremendous form after their rocky start to the season. Even in their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham, the Cherries played well, recording 24 shots to Tottenhams 12. In eight of their last nine games in all competitions, Iraola's side have scored at least two goals, with key man Dominic Solanke in a rich vein of form, boasting 12 league goals already.
The return of Alex Scott from injury has added extra tenacity, creativity and guile to the midfield, while Marcus Tavernier has shown remarkable improvement, contributing to six goals already. While Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo will be big misses to AFCON, Bournemouth have enough talent to replace them.
Liverpool are in a team selection crisis, with Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Thiago and Trent Alexander Arnold all missing out. Talisman Mo Salah and midfield anchor Wataru Endo are missing through international duty, while Dominik Szoboszlai could miss out through a muscle injury.
Liverpool's squad is really stretched and will will inspire Bournemouth who I believe have all the tools to gain a surprise result.
