Both Newcastle United and Bournemouth got their Premier League campaigns up and running with a positive result last weekend but where is the value at the Vitality Stadium?
Bournemouth began their Premier League campaign by securing a point on the road against Nottingham Forest. A late strike from Antoine Semenyo in the 86th minute salvaged a valuable draw, and all points on the road will help the club achieve their aim to finish in the top 10 come May 2025.
Although Dominic Solanke secured his move to Spurs before their opening match, the Cherries moved quickly to secure Brazilian forward Evanilson for £40m. The former Porto striker is likely to make his debut against Newcastle this weekend having been registered too late to make his debut at the City Ground.
Newcastle managed to edge out Southampton at St James' Park but the result was overshadowed by Fabian Schar's controversial red card in the first half. With Kieran Trippier potentially on his way out of the club, Valentino Livramento has been drafted in at right-back, while Dan Burn has moved to the centre-back role. This makeshift defence is likely to cause Eddie Howe a few issues in the opening rounds of their Premier League campaign.
Last season, Newcastle's away form was rather concerning. Having lost 11 matches on the road, this is something which will need to drastically improve if the Magpies are to return to European football.
Head coach Andoni Iraolo has impressed since taking over at the Vitality Stadium and the 42-year-old will have high hopes of a successful season - especially having brought in Porto's Evanilson to replace Solanke.
The Brazilian hasn't been the only addition, with Barcelona's Julian Araujo and Leeds United's Luis Sinisterra joining the Cherries has certainly made Bournemouth a team to watch this season.
Recent history suggests the hosts can keep Newcastle at bay, having only lost one of their last five head-to-head matches. That defeat came in the Carabao Cup back in 2022, whereas this particular fixture last campaign saw Bournemouth come out on top 2-0. Eddie Howe hasn't enjoyed trips back to his old club since his departure.
Newcastle, for a number of reasons, failed to deliver last campaign. Injuries, suspensions and general poor performances on the road hindered any progress, and fans will be hoping they can get back on track without any European distraction to contend with.
However, with their ongoing defensive issues, it may be a while before we see Newcastle reach the level they are capable of. They haven't won at the Vitality Stadium since 2020, and that was their only win in their last five trips to the south coast.
Their win against Southampton didn't allow their attacking players to influence the game due to Schar's red card, and they might still require some minutes in their legs in order to blow off some pre-season cobwebs.
With Bournemouth beginning to find their feet under their Spanish coach, the hosts will look to claim all three points in their first home game of the season against a makeshift Newcastle side that have travelled from one end of the country to the other for this fixture.
Bournemouth fans might have been concerned when Dominic Solanke was pictured in a Spurs shirt for the first time but this weekend they will get to see their new record breaking signing take his place. Porto's Evanilson has played his way into the Brazilian national team for Copa America, and has impressed both domestically and in the Champions League during his time in Portugal.
The Cherries fought back bravely to secure a solid point at the City Ground last weekend, and Antoine Semenyo will keep Evanilson on his toes as they fight for the number nine spot. With new signing Sinisterra and Marcus Tavernier in behind, Bournemouth have plenty of creative talent that are capable of unlocking defences, and Newcastle might be their next victims.
Newcastle had a tough opening week despite collecting three points, but Howe's record on the road last season as well as against his old club is concerning. The long journey to Bournemouth clearly doesn't help, and if their away form spills over from last season, it could be a difficult afternoon for the Magpies.
The hosts will be in a confident mood as they return to the Vitality Stadium for the first team this season and the fact you can back Iraola's team on a plus Asian Handicap line is extremely appealing. I'm recommending Bournemouth +0.25 Asian Handicap on Sunday, with Howe potentially leaving his old club scratching his head once more.
