Chris Billam-Smith will be looking to move back into world title contention this weekend when he takes on Cheavon Clarke at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday evening.
CBS is a former WBO cruiserweight champion and WBA (Super) cruiserweight contender and is eager to get back to the big table. He lost his WBO strap while challenging for the WBA (Super) belt against Gilberto Ramirez in Saudi Arabia in November 2024.
Since that loss, CBS has been back in the ring twice. His first fight after his second career loss saw him win a points decision fight against Brandon Glanton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before returning home to Bournemouth to see Ryan Rozicki's corner retire him at the end of round seven.
Cheavon Clarke is a former British cruiserweight champion - as is Billam-Smith - and has a professional record of 14 fights, 12 wins and two defeats. Nine of those victories are by way of KO, which shows he is a power puncher at this level and is more than capable of causing CBS a whole host of problems.
Clarke lost his British cruiserweight belt against fellow Brit Viddal Riley back in April. He has fought twice since and recorded wins against Anthony Hollaway and Jack Massey. That defeat against Riley was his second loss in succession following a split points loss against Leonardo Mosquea.
Clarke might be on a winning streak at the moment, but he needs a strong performance against Billam-Smith in order to finally receive a world title opportunity.
I believe this will be an entertaining bout with both fighters not taking a backward step, but in the end I am going with CBS to have his arm raised at the end of the 12 rounds.
I am expecting it to go the distance with CBS being more dominant the longer the fight goes on. I would not be entirely surprised if CBS forced a late stoppage, but for now, I will stick with a points win.
