Sheffield fighter Dalton Smith returns home this weekend to take on Albert Puello at the Sheffield Utilita Arena in what will be the first defence of his WBC Super Lightweight title.
The 29-year-old Yorkshireman was crowned WBC super lightweight champion in his last bout where he stopped Subriel Matias in the fifth round to secure a TKO win and his first genuine world title bet.
Before winning the WBC super lightweight belt, Smith had won the European super lightweight title, the British light welterweight belt, WBC Silver light welterweight title and the English light welterweight belt.
He is now fighting at world level, and will face his toughest test yet when he takes on Dominican Republic fighter Alberto Puello. 'The Wasp' is a former WBA world super lightweight champion and will be a difficult opponent for Smith.
Puello first won the WBA interim super lightweight belt with a points decision win over Jonathan Alonso, before winning the title outright with another points win - this time over Batyr Akhmedov.
In Puello's second title defence, he lost his strap with a majority points decision win over Matias in July 2025. Puello returned to action just over 12 months later and record a TKO win in the fourth round over Miguel Angel Bolano.
Puello is determined to be a world champion again, and he will be keen to get back the title he lost over 15 months ago. Smith will be hoping home advantage will play a major part. The Sheffield fighter is on home turf and has yet to lose a professional fight, and he will not want that first loss to come in front of his friends and family.
I do believe that this will be Smith's toughest test, but he is capable of beating anyone put in his way. He can use his strength and power to get his opponent out quickly, or he can dig in and go the distance, He has won 14 of his 19 fight by KO/TKO, but he has five decision wins as well.
Puello will put up some resistance, but I cannot see it going the distance. I am backing Smith to get Puello out of there inside five rounds. Smith will weigh up Puello in the opening two or three rounds, before upping his work rate and his quality and power will take over.
