Joshua Buatsi is aiming to become a genuine world champion for the first time in his career when he faces Willy Hutchinson in a rematch from their September 2024 fight - this time the vacant WBA Light Heavyweight title is on the line.
Buatsi won the WBA International light-heavyweight in his last fight against Zach Parker, but victory over Hutchinson will see him land his first recognised world title that is not an interim belt.
These two fought over two years ago at Wembley Stadium with Buatsi winning a split decision despite knocking Hutchinson down to canvas on two separate occasions.
Two judges scored the bout 117-108 and 115-110 in favour of Buatsi, while the third judge scored it 113-112 to Hutchinson with JB taking the WBO interim light heavyweight.
Buatsi lost the interim belt in his first defence against Callum Smith with a unanimous points win in Saudi Arabia, but he got back to winning ways in his next fight with a majority decision win over Parker to win the vacant WBA International light heavyweight title.
Hutchinson has only two professional losses on his record and that was against Buatsi and Lennox Clarke. His last two fights since the Buatsi loss have seen him beat Mark Jeffers by TKO and Ezra Taylor on points to win the vacant WBA Continental and WBO Global light heavyweight titles.
Buatsi comes into this fight ranked number 4 by the WBC and 5 by the Ring Magazine, while Hutchinson is ranked 7 by both the WBC and The Ring.
The first fight between Buatsi and Hutchinson was a war, many felt Buatsi won it convincingly but Hutchinson showed heart and will feel he can push Buatsi even closer this time. Hutchinson was knocked down twice last time, so if he can avoid touching the canvas at the AO Arena in Manchester, then he has the chance to cause an upset.
Buatsi is determined to be crowned an outright world champion and he will believe he already has Hutchinson's number. If he starts quickly, his power could hurt Hutchinson and this fight will be over.
However, Hutchinson is no mug. He needs to avoid Buatsi's power punching and fight this one at his own pace. I think we will see a more mature Buatsi in this fight and he will not be too quick to make rash decisions. I think this will go the distance once again with Buatsi getting his arm raised at the end.
