Arsenal are back in the Premier League title race following three successive victories to reduce Liverpool’s lead to six points. They travel to Brighton -who have not won in seven league matches - on Saturday looking to remain hot on their heels.
Brighton’s recent form has not been spectacular, although they have only lost one of their last five matches in the Premier League.
They have not picked up three points since they beat Bournemouth away 2-1 on November 23. They have drawn four out of their last five games with their only defeat being a 3-1 home loss against rivals Crystal Palace.
They are currently on a three game unbeaten streak with three consecutive draws against West Ham United, Brentford and Aston Villa. They will be eager to end their winless run and start to climb the table.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler has quite a few injury concerns with the likes of Danny Welbeck, James Milner, Evan Ferguson, Pervis Estupinan all carrying knocks.
Arsenal cannot be too concerned with what Premier League leaders Liverpool are doing at the moment. They need to concentrate on their own results and just hope they can keep the pressure on at the top of the table.
They trail the Reds by six points, but there is a long way still to go in the campaign and Liverpool are still expected to drop some points along the way.
As long as the Gunners keep winning they will still be in with a shot of the title come the end of the season. Arsenal are undefeated in their last nine league matches and they have won three on the bounce.
Their last defeat was a 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle United in November. Since then they have won six and drawn three.
Bukayo Saka remains on the sidelines with a hamstring problem, while Raheem Sterling, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are also out. Jurien Timber will miss the trip to Brighton due to suspension
Brighton and Arsenal have met on 26 occasions over the years with the Seagulls winning eight and the Gunners being victorious in 13.
These two last met in August this season with Kai Havertz putting Arsenal ahead before Joao Pedro levelled. The Gunners ended the game with 10-men after Declan Rice was dismissed for two yellow cards.
Arsenal have won three of their last five encounters with Brighton’s last win being a 3-0 success at the Emirates in May 2023.
Brighton have not won on home soil against the Gunners since they recorded a 2-1 success in June 2020 when Neal Maupay scored a 90th minute winner.
Arsenal can continue to put pressure on league leaders Liverpool with a fourth consecutive Premier League victory. They cannot do much about Liverpool’s form, but as long as the London club keeps winning then they will be in with a shout.
Brighton will not be too concerned that they have not won in seven matches because they have picked up points with five draws.
Arsenal are clear favourites to win this game on the road and can be backed at 3/4 with BetMGM. The Seagulls are outsiders at 18/5 with the draw available at 11/4.
Arsenal avoided a potential banana skin on New Year’s Day when they came from behind to defeat Brentford.
The Bees took the lead after just 12 minutes thanks to Bryan Mbeumo, but the Gunners hit back with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli to record a 3-1 victory.
Arsenal are missing Saka and they might need some reinforcements in the January transfer window, but at the moment Jesus and Martinelli are holding the line well and are a major threat for the Gunners.
Jesus has found the back of the net six times in his last four appearances in all competitions. That is one more goal than he managed in his previous 48 games. He is finding the form he had when he was winning trophies at Manchester City.
Martinelli is also finding some form and is relishing the responsibility he has of being chief creator with Saka out injured.
The Brazil international has scored two goals in his last three matches and he will be looking to be a pivotal cog in Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge.
The Gunners need to take the game to Brighton as they will never ease up. We are backing Jesus to continue his rich vein of form in front of goal with another, while we are combining that with a goal from Martinelli and a win for Arsenal.
