A real relegation battle takes place at Turf Moor on Friday evening with Burnley playing host to Luton Town. Both teams gained promotion from the Championship last season, but they are in the drop zone together and cannot afford to be dropping points against teams around them. The Clarets, who were promoted as champions, are second from bottom with just three wins to their name. The Hatters have one more win under their belt and victory on Friday will see them move out of the relegation places and above Everton.
Burnley are in danger of being cut adrift in the relegation places if they are not careful. With 11 points they are four points behind Luton and five behind Everton who are just outside the drop zone. The Clarets have won just one of their last five Premier League matches with three defeats and one draw. If they are to avoid the drop, then they need to be beating teams like Luton Town. If they lose on Friday they will be in serious trouble. Three of their next four Premier League matches are against Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. If they cannot beat Luton, then you cannot see them getting results against those three either. Charlie Taylor, Lyle Foster and Hjalmar Ekdal are injury concerns for Vincent Kompany.
Luton Town were written off before the Premier League season even kicked off. Many people believed the Hatters would struggle to win a single game and that they would be relegated by Christmas. Well, we are into 2024 and they are still fighting. Granted they received a massive boost when Everton had their 10 points deducted, but they are still in the battle for survival. Luton have won four games in the Premier League this season, with two of them coming in their last three matches. They saw a two-game winning streak in the league end in a 3-2 loss at home at Chelsea. Luton are not having problems finding the back of the net, their main worry is conceding. They have scored in their last seven matches, but they just need to shore up their defence. Tom Lockyer is still absent following his cardiac arrest against Bournemouth last month.
These two teams have already met this season with Burnley running out 2-1 winners at Kenilworth Road back in October. Overall, Burnley have a slight advantage over the Hatters. The Clarets have won 14 of their 29 encounters with Luton winning eight. Burnley have won four of their last seven encounters with the other three ending in draws. Luton Town last defeated Burnley in League One back in March 2000 with a 2-0 success. That victory was the last in a sequence of four consecutive victories for the Hatters.
Burnley need to turn Turf Moor into a fortress if they are to avoid relegation this season. They cannot afford to be dropping points at home, especially against teams around them. A lot of people still think all three teams that gained promotion last season will go back down, but a victory for Luton could change some people’s minds. Take a look at these stats and best betting odds ahead of the game on Friday evening.
Our Betting Tip for Today- Luton Town to win – 14/5 @ Bet365
You would normally fancy the home side to get something from most games, but I struggle to see where Burnley’s next win will come from. They are still the favourites at 19/20. The Hatters can be backed at 14/5 to claim three vital points, while the draw is on offer at 13/5.
Out of the three teams currently in the relegation places, I feel that Luton Town have the best chance of avoiding the drop and staying in the Premier League. It will be difficult because they do not have a squad littered with superstars, but they do have a fighting spirit and they will battle until the end. Luton's recent form against Burnley is not great, but I see that changing this weekend. I can see the Hatters taking all three points under the lights at Turf Moor to temporarily move them out of danger.
