Two in-form sides clash on Thursday evening, when Chelsea welcome Manchester City to Stamford Bridge for a clash that could be crucial when it comes to the home side sealing a top-four finish in the Premier League. City have been in superb form since the league resumed earlier this month, while Chelsea have also collected six points from six in their last two games. Read on to see where the best betting value can be found in what should be an exciting game!
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team have shown some good form since Premier League action resumed. In their two games after the resumption, the Blues have beaten Everton 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, and Aston Villa 2-1 in Birmingham. They have now opened up a five-point gap on fifth-placed Manchester United, and look to be in a strong position when it comes to claiming a Champions League spot. Home advantage could be key to the Londoners’ chances of success – but the Blues have won just seven of their last 15 games at Stamford Bridge. The absence of a crowd may actually prove helpful.
Pep Guardiola’s City side might have no chance of winning the title this season, but they have clearly not given up on finishing the 2019/20 campaign as strongly as possible. In their two games since the Premier League resumed action, City have scored eight goals and conceded none. Those two matches have both been at home. They have beaten Arsenal 3-0 and Burnley 5-0. If you think that they will score three goals at Chelsea, William Hill are offering odds of 4/1 on them doing so. Sergio Aguero is the man to watch – he has 16 Premier League goals to his name this season.
Chelsea have much more to play for than City in this game, with the Blues desperate to hang onto fourth place and see off the challenge of Manchester United. They are also still just three points behind third-placed Leicester City, so will want to exert some pressure on the Foxes with a win here. For City, the title is long gone, despite them still having a mathematical chance of overtaking Liverpool. If they don’t win here, even that mathematical chance is gone, though.
One man to watch for City is Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. He has provided 16 assists for his team-mates in 2019/20. He has also scored nine goals of his own. If you think he can score against Chelsea, William Hill have a price of 12/5 on him scoring at any time, which looks like an interesting bet. Another man to watch for City is England winger Raheem Sterling. He is the club’s second highest scorer in the Premier League, with 12 goals to his name this season.
There have been 45 Premier League meetings between these teams in total. Out of those 45 games, Chelsea have won 25 and City just 13. Of those Chelsea victories, 13 have been at home, while City have won only four times in west London. City have won the last two Premier League meetings, Guardiola’s men won 2-1 at the Etihad earlier this season, and destroyed the Blues 6-0 in last season’s game in Manchester. The two sides also met in the League Cup final in 2019 at Wembley. That game ended 0-0, before City won 4-3 on penalties to take the cup.
If Chelsea are to win this game, they will need their forward line to be firing and in form. Tammy Abraham could be a key player for the home side. The forward has struck 13 goals in the Premier League this season, and has also provided three assists for his team-mates. Three of his goals have come with headers and 10 with his right foot. Strangely, he is yet to score this season with his left foot.
Our recommended tip for this match comes from William Hill, who are offering a price of 11/5 on City to win and both teams to score. We think that Chelsea certainly have enough attacking power to score at least once, and home advantage might well work in their favour too. But City have an enviable assortment of riches when it comes to their offensive power. The home side may well score the game’s first goal, but we would expect that just to fire City up. Our prediction for the game’s final score is Chelsea 1-3 City.
