The Premier League continues this weekend, with Newcastle United looking to continue their unbeaten run (written before their midweek trip to Southampton). For today’s betting tip, we are focusing on the crucial matchup between Chelsea and Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea bounced back from their disappointing cup final defeat to Liverpool by dismantling Burnley last weekend. The Blues ran out 4-0 victors at Turf Moor, but the headlines for Chelsea were mainly off the pitch.
It was announced that Chelsea may be for sale, they may not be able to renew any contracts, but we wait to see if that affects them when they play Newcastle this weekend.
For Sunday’s matchup, they’ll continue to be without both Reece James and Ben Chillwell, while Cesar Azpilicueta should be fit enough to play.
No team has enjoyed a turnaround quite like Newcastle United. They entered the January transfer window as a last cause, and a favourite for relegation, but the Magpies have strung together a run of form and they are heading for mid-table.
One of the catalysts for Newcastle’s success has been their January acquisitions. Chris Wood and Dan Burn have slotted into Eddie Howe’s plans, while Kieran Trippier was a huge contributor before his injury.
Despite Newcastle’s impressive form, they will have to buck the trend of history if they want to win at Stamford Bridge. The Toon Army haven’t been able to beat Chelsea when they travelled to London since May 2nd 2012 - a 2-0 victory.
However, if Newcastle can tap into what has made them so successful, they may have a chance. They have won four of their last five games in the Premier League, including wins over Everton, Burnley, and Aston Villa.
For as good as Newcastle have been, Chelsea should win this fixture. They’re enjoying a three-game winning streak, and they need to keep a gap in the top four. We think they pick up the victory at home by a two-goal margin or more at 5/6
