Chelsea host bottom placed Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, hoping to return to winning ways after a cruel 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa. The hosts have dropped to 7th, but have the ideal opportunity to return to winning ways against an all-but relegated Saints side.
Chelsea will bounce back
Chelsea were moments away from a well-earned point against Aston Villa on Saturday night before Filip Jorgensen's last minute blunder cost them. To their credit, Chelsea went toe-to-toe with their opponents, and looked incredibly dangerous on the break - Cole Palmer had a huge chance to win it for the visitors late on.
And while this is now three defeats on the bounce for Enzo Maresca's side, there were plenty of encouraging signs at Villa Park that a win is around the corner - especially against the worst side in the league in front of their own fans.
Maresca does, however, have a big choice as to who he starts between the sticks going forward.
Hopeless Saints to suffer once more
It was yet another defeat and dismal display from Southampton at the weekend, as Brighton came to St. Mary's and comfortably won the three points, scoring four goals in the process.
That was their fourth defeat in their last five matches, and eighth in their last 10. Currently 13 points adrift at the foot of the table, Southampton look destined to return to the Championship as the gap between that league and the Premier League continues to grow.
On the road, they've picked up just five points from a possible 39, conceding 24 goals - and it looks like it will be a long night at the Bridge.
For those that like to steer towards recent head-to-heads before placing a bet, you might be swayed into thinking Southampton are capable of getting a result.
Southampton have only lost one of their last five matches at Stamford Bridge, winning 2-0 back in 2019 as well as 1-0 on their last visit back in 2023. James Ward-Prowse scored the winner that day, and how they'd love someone with his ability in the squad this campaign.
Chelsea, therefore, can't take anything for granted.
But having lost three matches in a row, and after the performance they delivered on Saturday, Chelsea will be out to prove a point. Don't expect the hosts to take this fixture for granted, and an early goal can set the tone as they look to improve their recent form over Southampton on home soil.
Despite Chelsea heading into this match in poor form, Southampton's problems are a lot more concerning. The hosts are fighting for Europe, while their guests are already preparing for next campaign in the Championship. Advantage, then, to Chelsea.
Dominant display incoming
There's little surprise to see Chelsea as short as they are to win this match having won the reverse fixture 5-1. Throw in the fact Southampton arrive into this having conceded at least three goals in four of their last five Premier League matches, there only appears to be one outcome here.
Admittedly, Chelsea are in a difficult moment - but there were plenty of positives at the weekend. Europe is still on the table if they finish the season strongly, and a statement win here could be what the players, fans and manager needs to get back on track.
At the Bridge, Chelsea have won their last two matches, beating Wolves and West Ham, as well as previously rescuing a point against high-flying Bournemouth.
At St. Mary's, the goals were shared around the team but once again Cole Palmer found the back of the net. He heads into this fixture having failed to score in his last six - but he won't get many better opportunities this season.
He's still scored 14 Premier League goals in 26 appearances, and with that in mind, you can back Chelsea to win and Cole Palmer to score is priced at 4/5 with bet365. Goals are expected, and Palmer can play his part. Good luck if you're following.
