Elgin endured a dreadful 2022/2023 campaign in Scottish League Two. They only avoided a relegation play off by just a single point, and finished the season with the worst defensive record in the division.

New manager Ross Draper will have his hands full if he wants to avoid another season of struggle for the Black and Whites. So far, Elgin have bought in just one new player (Liam Harvey from Aberdeen) and with continuing financial troubles restricting their transfer activity, it looks like a long season ahead at Borough Briggs.

Motherwell’s 2022/23 campaign was an up and down affair. After a bright start, a run of just two wins in 20 games, saw them dragged into a relegation scrap. However, they finished the season with just one defeat from their final nine games, to finish on top of the bottom half of the Premiership.

A key part of that excellent finish to the season was Dutch striker Kevin van Veen (29 goals in 44 games). His departure back to the Netherlands leaves a huge hole in the Motherwell squad. So far, the only incoming forward players have been English lower league strikers Connor Wilkinson and Jonathan Obika.

Elgin City and Motherwell last met in 1909. That Scottish Cup clash ended in a 6-1 triumph for Motherwell and is the only prior meeting between the teams. In last season’s League Cup, Elgin finished bottom of their group with no points from their four games. Motherwell reached the quarter finals, where they were thrashed 4-0 by Celtic.
